Brander Vineyard
History
Brander Vineyard is a renowned winery located in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley, California. Founded in 1975 by Fred Brander, the winery has become synonymous with producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and showcases the unique terroir of the region.
Fred Brander, a European immigrant, was captivated by the potential of winemaking in California when he settled in Santa Barbara County. Inspired by the success of European-style winemaking in Napa Valley, Fred saw the opportunity to create high-quality wines with a focus on the grape variety that was gaining popularity – Sauvignon Blanc.
In the early years of Brander Vineyard, Fred faced numerous challenges. The Santa Ynez Valley had yet to establish itself as a significant wine region, and many doubted the potential of the area for winemaking. Undeterred, Fred planted his first vineyard in 1975 with Sauvignon Blanc vines imported from France. This marked the beginning of his journey to showcase the potential of this grape variety in California.
With diligent work in the vineyard, Fred quickly established Brander Vineyard as one of the leading producers of Sauvignon Blanc in the region. His dedication to crafting wines that reflected the varietal's true character, with vibrant acidity and distinctive aromatics, gained recognition and established Brander as a household name for lovers of this grape variety.
As the reputation of Brander Vineyard grew, so did the demand. The winery expanded its vineyards, planting additional grape varieties such as Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The diverse soil types and microclimates within the Santa Ynez Valley provided the ideal conditions to experiment with different grape varieties and produce wines of exceptional quality and complexity.
Over the years, Brander Vineyard has garnered numerous accolades and awards. Fred's commitment to sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention in winemaking has further solidified the winery's reputation as a leader in the industry. Today, the winery remains family-owned and operated, with Fred's son, Erik Brander, carrying on his father's legacy.
In addition to producing exceptional wines, Brander Vineyard has also played a significant role in promoting the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine region. Fred Brander actively participated in organizations such as the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association, working with other local wineries to champion the region's wines and increase both recognition and tourism.
Visiting Brander Vineyard is a memorable experience. The winery's tasting room, nestled amongst the vineyards, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley. Visitors can enjoy a tasting of their acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc and other varietals while learning about the winemaking process and the history of the winery from their friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Brander Vineyard's unwavering commitment to quality and passion for crafting exceptional wines has established them as one of the most respected wineries in California. Their dedication to showcasing the unique terroir of the Santa Ynez Valley through their wines continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and solidify their place among the vanguard of California winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
