Blackbird Vineyards History

Blackbird Vineyards is a prominent winery situated in the heart of the Napa Valley in California. Founded in 2003 by Michael Polenske, the winery has quickly established itself as a pioneer in crafting exceptional Bordeaux-style wines.

The story of Blackbird Vineyards begins with Michael Polenske's passion for wine and his desire to create a winemaking project that would exemplify his love for the art of blending. Polenske, an entrepreneur with a background in marketing and finance, aimed to establish a winery that would combine Old World traditions with New World innovation.

To bring this vision to life, Polenske acquired 10 acres of prime vineyard land in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. This region is known for its optimal climate and diverse soil composition, making it an ideal terroir for growing Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Shortly after acquiring the vineyard, Polenske enlisted the expertise of winemaker Aaron Pott, a highly respected and talented oenologist known for his work at esteemed wineries across Napa Valley and Bordeaux. With Pott's guidance, Polenske set out to produce distinctive wines that captured the essence of Napa Valley while paying homage to the elegance and complexity of Bordeaux wines.

The name "Blackbird" holds a deep significance for Polenske, who drew inspiration from the Beatles' iconic song of the same name. As the song represents freedom and creativity, Blackbird Vineyards is dedicated to expressing the individuality and soulfulness of each wine they produce.

Blackbird Vineyards released its first vintage, the 2003 Proprietary Red Blend known as "Arriviste," in 2005. This wine showcased the winery's commitment to crafting unique, artful blends that reflected the characteristics of a harmonious symphony. Blending Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Arriviste was an instant success, captivating wine enthusiasts with its vibrant fruit flavors, supple tannins, and a touch of French oak aging.

Since its inaugural release, Blackbird Vineyards has continued to garner praise and recognition for its exceptional wines. The winery's flagship wine, "Paramour," is a Bordeaux-style blend that showcases the best lots from the estate vineyards. Comprising primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, Paramour embodies the epitome of Blackbird's dedication to balance, complexity, and the inherent beauty of blending.

In addition to Paramour, Blackbird Vineyards produces several other critically acclaimed wines, including the "Illustration" red blend and varietal-specific Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot bottlings. Each wine is meticulously crafted with the utmost attention to detail, from vineyard to bottle, showcasing Polenske's commitment to quality and his pursuit of excellence.

Not only known for their exceptional wines, Blackbird Vineyards has also gained recognition for their stunning winery estate and unique hospitality experiences. The winery is housed in a renovated 19th-century Victorian house, offering guests a charming and intimate setting to explore and enjoy their wines. Blackbird Vineyards provides personalized tastings, private events, and even a wine club for those seeking to immerse themselves in the world of Blackbird wines.

As Blackbird Vineyards continues to evolve, they remain dedicated to producing wines that transcend expectations, offering a distinctive and memorable experience for wine enthusiasts around the world. With their commitment to blending excellence, their passion for innovation, and their respect for the traditions of winemaking, Blackbird Vineyards remains at the forefront of the Napa Valley wine scene, leaving an indelible mark on the California wine industry.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
