Bear River Winery History

Bear River Winery is nestled in the heart of California's North Coast wine region, specifically in the scenic town of Grass Valley. Founded in 1979 by John and Linda Smith, Bear River Winery has been an integral part of the state's rich winemaking tradition for over four decades.

The winery's history dates back to when John Smith, a passionate wine enthusiast, envisioned planting his own vineyard in the beautiful Sierra Foothills. Inspired by the unique terroir of the region, John devoted himself to learning the art and science of winemaking while working in various wineries throughout California. His experience and knowledge laid the foundation for what would become Bear River Winery.

In 1979, John and Linda purchased a picturesque piece of land along the banks of the Bear River, which would become their winery's home. They carefully selected the finest grape varieties suited to the region's climate and soil, with a focus on producing small-batch, handcrafted wines of exceptional quality.

With their dedication and hard work, the Smiths transformed their dream of owning a winery into a reality. They built a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, equipped with modern technology to ensure the precision and consistency of their wines. However, they also embraced traditional winemaking methods, respecting the delicate balance between science and artistry.

Over the years, Bear River Winery gained recognition for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. John and Linda believed in preserving the natural beauty of the region and implemented measures such as solar power usage, water conservation, and organic farming techniques. These initiatives not only helped shape the winery's identity but also contributed to the overall quality and uniqueness of their wines.

Bear River Winery's portfolio boasts an impressive range of varietals that showcase the diverse flavors and nuances of the local microclimate. From bold red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel to elegant whites such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, each bottle reflects the passion and meticulous attention to detail in every stage of the winemaking process.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
