What Makes Ancient Peaks
Different From Other Nearby Wineries?
Ancient Peaks is a winery that stands out from the rest in the Central Coast region of California due to its unique location, commitment to sustainable farming practices, and its emphasis on showcasing the distinct qualities of its terroir.
One of the key factors that sets Ancient Peaks apart is its exceptional location within the Paso Robles AVA (American Viticultural Area). Nestled within the Santa Margarita Ranch, the winery benefits from a diverse microclimate that is influenced by the Pacific Ocean, creating ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The vineyards are situated at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,200 feet, which sets them apart from many other wineries in the region. This higher elevation brings cooler temperatures and longer growing seasons, allowing the grapes to ripen more slowly and develop complex flavors and aromas.
In addition to its prime location, Ancient Peaks is committed to sustainable farming practices. The winery follows a holistic approach to viticulture, taking into consideration the long-term health of the land, the well-being of their workers, and the ecological balance of the region. Ancient Peaks employs numerous sustainable practices such as using cover crops to minimize erosion and promote organic matter, practicing water conservation, and implementing integrated pest management techniques. By prioritizing sustainability, the winery aims to preserve the unique terroir of the region for future generations.
Furthermore, Ancient Peaks focuses on showcasing the distinctive characteristics of its terroir. The winery takes advantage of the diverse soil types found on their Santa Margarita Ranch, ranging from chalky shale to ancient sea beds. This variety of soil types contributes to the rich complexity and minerality found in their wines. Each vineyard block is managed separately, allowing the winemakers to highlight the unique flavors and characteristics of each specific plot of land. Ancient Peaks offers a diverse range of varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, all of which showcase the inherent qualities of the region.
Overall, Ancient Peaks differentiates itself from other wineries in the region through its exceptional location, commitment to sustainable practices, and focus on the unique terroir of their Santa Margarita Ranch vineyards. These factors contribute to the production of high-quality wines that reflect the essence of the Paso Robles AVA in every sip.

Ancient Peaks
History
Ancient Peaks Winery, situated in the picturesque Santa Margarita Ranch in Paso Robles, California, is a remarkable winery with a rich and storied history. The winery's story begins centuries ago, shaped by a unique combination of natural wonders, dedicated pioneers, and a commitment to excellence.
The origins of Ancient Peaks Winery can be traced back to the early Spanish missionaries who settled in California in the late 18th century. One of these missions, Mission San Miguel, was established near what is now Santa Margarita Ranch. The missionaries recognized the potential for winemaking in the fertile soils of the region and began planting vineyards, thereby laying the foundation for the winemaking tradition in the area.
Fast forward to the 19th century when the land was acquired by an enterprising rancher named Henry Ditmas. Ditmas, recognizing the exceptional qualities of the land for agriculture, dedicated himself to cultivating a thriving cattle ranch. The expansive ranch experienced significant growth and prosperity over the years, even surviving through the Great Depression.
In the late 20th century, a group of friends, including three local families: Filipponi, Ross, and Wittstrom, recognized the exceptional terroir of Santa Margarita Ranch and the incredible potential it held for producing world-class wines. With a shared passion for viticulture, they joined forces to bring Ancient Peaks Winery to life.
The name "Ancient Peaks" reflects the unique geography of the winery's location. The vineyards are surrounded by a ring of ancient volcanic formations – the Santa Lucia Mountains to the west, the La Panza Range to the east, and the California Coast Range to the south. These dramatic formations, created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, not only provide a stunning backdrop but also contribute to the distinctive characteristics of the wines.
With a commitment to sustainable practices and a deep respect for the land, Ancient Peaks Winery embarked on an ambitious journey to create wines that truly embodied the essence of Santa Margarita Ranch. It started in 2005 when the winery released its inaugural vintage, showcasing the unique qualities of the estate-grown fruit.
Ancient Peaks Winery is known for its dedication to single-vineyard wines, allowing the distinctive character of each parcel of land to shine through in the finished product. The winery operates five separate estate vineyards – Margarita Vineyard, Santa Margarita Ranch Vineyard, Oyster Ridge Vineyard, Renegade Vineyard, and Bella Vista Vineyard – each with its own distinctive microclimate, soil composition, and grape varieties.
In addition to their commitment to quality winemaking, Ancient Peaks Winery has also become a vocal advocate for sustainability and environmental stewardship. The winery has implemented numerous practices to minimize its carbon footprint and preserve the surrounding ecosystem. From utilizing solar power and water conservation techniques to promoting biodiversity and habitat restoration, Ancient Peaks Winery sets an example for sustainable agriculture in the region.
Today, Ancient Peaks Winery continues to thrive, producing exceptional wines that showcase the terroir of Santa Margarita Ranch. With their unwavering commitment to quality and sustainability, the winery has garnered numerous accolades and a loyal following of wine enthusiasts who appreciate the unique wines crafted from this remarkable corner of California.
In conclusion, the history of Ancient Peaks Winery is deeply intertwined with the legacy of Santa Margarita Ranch and the remarkable land it calls home. From the Spanish missionaries who recognized its viticultural potential to the pioneers who brought the winery to fruition, Ancient Peaks stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and a genuine love for the art and science of winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
