Alpen Cellars
History
Alpen Cellars is a historic winery located in the picturesque Scott Valley of Northern California. Nestled amidst the stunning backdrop of the Marble Mountain Wilderness, this winery holds a rich history that spans over four decades.
The story of Alpen Cellars begins in 1984 when founder John Bierschwale, a passionate winemaker, set out to establish his own vineyard and winery in the region. Inspired by his love for European winemaking traditions, particularly those of the German and Swiss regions, Bierschwale aimed to create wines that reflected the terroir and cool-climate conditions of the Scott Valley.
The name "Alpen Cellars" was carefully chosen to pay homage to Bierschwale's German-Swiss heritage and reflect the winery's commitment to crafting wines that embodied the character and elegance found in alpine regions. With the lofty goal of producing world-class wines in mind, Bierschwale selected the ideal location in Scott Valley, known for its fertile soils and favorable climate.
The winery's commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices was apparent right from the start. Bierschwale dedicated himself to cultivating a vineyard that respected the land and worked in harmony with nature. Alpen Cellars became one of the early pioneers of organic viticulture in California and achieved official organic certification, remaining dedicated to sustainable farming practices to this day.
Over the years, Alpen Cellars has specialized in cool-climate grape varietals that thrive in the unique microclimate of Scott Valley. These varietals include Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Chardonnay. The winery's commitment to these cooler-climate grapes reflects Bierschwale's desire to create wines of finesse and elegance, with bright acidity and distinctive flavors.
Alpen Cellars' location in the Scott Valley provides ideal conditions for these varietals. The cool coastal breezes and temperature swings between day and night assist in developing the complex flavors and preserving the natural acidity that defines Alpen Cellars wines. The vineyard's elevation, ranging from 2,400 to 3,000 feet above sea level, also contributes to the uniqueness of their wines.
Apart from its exceptional wines, Alpen Cellars has also gained recognition as an iconic destination for wine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The winery's rustic and charming tasting room offers visitors an opportunity to savor their acclaimed wines while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
