What Makes Acumen Wine Different From Other Nearby Wineries?

Acumen Wine stands out among other wineries in the region due to its unique approach to winemaking, unwavering commitment to quality, and innovative practices. There are several key aspects that set Acumen Wine apart:

1. Estate-Grown Grapes: Acumen Wine is located in the esteemed Atlas Peak AVA (American Viticultural Area) within the Napa Valley region of California. Unlike many wineries that source their grapes from various vineyards, Acumen Wine focuses on cultivating estate-grown grapes. This means that every wine produced by Acumen comes from their own vineyards, allowing for meticulous control and a deep connection to the land, resulting in wines that truly reflect the terroir of the region.

2. High-Elevation Vineyards: The vineyards of Acumen Wine are situated on steep slopes at elevations between 1,300 and 1,600 feet. These high-elevation sites provide unique growing conditions, including cooler temperatures, greater diurnal temperature variation, and well-drained volcanic soils. These factors contribute to the production of intensely flavored grapes that yield wines with exceptional balance, complexity, and age-worthy potential.

3. Focused Portfolio: Acumen Wine prides itself on its focused portfolio. Instead of producing a wide range of different wines, they specialize in limited-production, handcrafted wines from select varietals that thrive in their unique vineyard sites. This includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a few other Bordeaux varietals. The meticulous attention to detail and focus on specific varietals allows Acumen to consistently produce wines of exceptional quality and character.

4. Sustainable Farming Practices: Acumen Wine is dedicated to sustainable farming practices and environmentally friendly viticulture. They believe in preserving the integrity of the land for future generations. From vineyard management techniques to energy conservation and water efficiency, Acumen Wine prioritizes sustainability at every stage of the winemaking process.

5. State-of-the-Art Winery: Acumen Wine's state-of-the-art winery facility, located on the slopes of Atlas Peak, further differentiates them from other wineries in the region. Designed to minimize environmental impact and optimize winemaking, the facility incorporates gravity-flow techniques, a variety of fermentation vessels, and underground cellars for aging. This cutting-edge infrastructure allows for precise and gentle handling of the grapes, extracting the best qualities from each varietal.

6. Elevation Wine Club: Acumen Wine offers an exclusive wine club, known as the Elevation Club, to share their limited-production wines and unique experiences with their members. Club members gain access to small-lot wines, library vintages, private events, and personalized tastings, fostering a sense of community and connection with the winery.

In conclusion, Acumen Wine differentiates itself from other wineries in the region through its estate-grown, high-elevation vineyards, focused portfolio, dedication to sustainability, state-of-the-art winery, and commitment to providing exceptional wine experiences to its members. Each bottle of Acumen Wine represents the passion, artistry, and terroir of their unique vineyard sites, making it a must-visit winery for wine enthusiasts seeking unparalleled quality and distinction in the Napa Valley.

Acumen Wine History

Acumen Wine, a renowned winery located in the prestigious Napa Valley of California, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the early 1990s. This beloved winery has carved a niche for itself in California's wine industry with its commitment to crafting exceptional wines that truly reflect the unique terroir of the region. The story of Acumen Wine is one of passion, dedication, and a profound love for winemaking.

The foundation of Acumen Wine was laid by the Van Staaveren family, whose passion for wine led them on a journey of discovery and exploration. The Van Staaveren's deep-rooted connection to the land led them to Napa Valley, a region renowned for its world-class wines. Inspired by the potential of this extraordinary terroir, they set out to establish a winery that would reflect the true essence of the land and showcase the finest expressions of Napa Valley's diverse microclimates.

The dream of Acumen Wine came to fruition in 2012 when the Van Staaveren family purchased two stunning vineyards atop the Atlas Peak AVA, with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below. These vineyards, known as the Edcora and Attelas, became the heart and soul of Acumen Wine.

The Edcora Vineyard, perched at an elevation of 1,320 feet, spans across 32 acres of rocky volcanic soil, offering ideal conditions for cultivating Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec. The Attelas Vineyard, on the other hand, sits at an elevation of 1,450 feet, encompassing 84 acres of diverse soils, resulting in a broad range of flavor profiles in the vines that are grown there.

At the helm of this incredible endeavor was winemaker Denis Malbec, a respected and talented figure in the wine industry. Sadly, Denis passed away in 2015, leaving behind an indelible mark on Acumen Wine. His dedication to crafting wines of exceptional quality still inspires the winemaking team at Acumen to this day, as they continue to strive for excellence in every bottle.

Acumen Wine is celebrated for its meticulous approach to winemaking, with an unwavering commitment to producing wines that truly reflect the unique characteristics of their vineyards. The winery practices sustainable farming methods, focusing on the preservation of the land and its natural resources.

Acumen Wine's portfolio includes a range of exquisite wines, each with its own distinct personality and refined elegance. From their bold and opulent Cabernet Sauvignons to their expressive Sauvignon Blancs, each wine showcases the inherent qualities of the Napa Valley. The wines of Acumen have garnered critical acclaim over the years, solidifying the winery's position as one of Napa Valley's premier producers.

Today, Acumen Wine continues to push the boundaries of winemaking in Napa Valley. Their unwavering commitment to quality and their deep respect for the land they call home are the driving forces behind every bottle they produce. Acumen Wine stands as a testament to the vision, passion, and unwavering dedication of the Van Staaveren family, as they strive to create wines that showcase the extraordinary beauty and terroir of Napa Valley.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
