Zotovich Vineyards and Winery
History
Zotovich Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned and operated winery located in the beautiful Santa Rita Hills appellation of California's Central Coast. Founded in 2005 by Steve and Cheryl Zotovich, the winery and vineyard have become known for their dedication to producing exceptional cool-climate wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.
The story of Zotovich Vineyards begins with Steve Zotovich's early passion for wine. Growing up in a winemaking family, Steve developed a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking from a young age. After studying enology and viticulture at California State University, Fresno, Steve gained valuable experience working at various wineries in California and abroad before deciding to pursue his dream of establishing his own winery.
In search of the perfect location to cultivate exceptional grapes and produce outstanding wines, Steve and Cheryl discovered the untamed beauty of Santa Rita Hills. Known for its cool, maritime-influenced climate, the region is particularly well-suited for the cultivation of Burgundian grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive in the unique combination of foggy mornings, cool afternoon breezes, and well-drained soils.
With a clear vision in mind, Steve and Cheryl planted their first vineyard in 2005, carefully selecting the ideal grape varieties and clones for the site. Over the years, they have expanded their vineyard holdings, and today Zotovich Vineyards encompasses 35 acres of meticulously maintained vineyards, predominantly dedicated to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The Zotovich family's commitment to sustainable farming practices is also evident in their vineyard management. They prioritize organic and biodynamic farming methods, working in harmony with the land to produce grapes that reflect the purest expression of the unique Santa Rita Hills terroir. From meticulously hand-tending the vines to practicing cover cropping and using natural pest control methods, the family's dedication to sustainable farming ensures the long-term health and vitality of their vineyards.
In addition to their vineyard operations, Zotovich Vineyards boasts a state-of-the-art winery facility that allows for gentle handling of the grapes and careful control of the winemaking process. With the guidance of renowned winemaker Ryan Zotovich, Steve and Cheryl's son, the family produces a limited production of handcrafted wines that beautifully express the character and elegance of the Santa Rita Hills.
The portfolio of Zotovich Vineyards' wines includes both estate-grown single vineyard releases and cuvées sourced from select vineyards throughout the region. Each wine is made with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing the distinct qualities of the grape varieties and the unique nuances of each vineyard site.
Since its founding, Zotovich Vineyards and Winery has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following of wine enthusiasts. Their wines have been recognized with top ratings and accolades from respected wine publications and competitions, solidifying their reputation as one of Santa Barbara County's premier wineries.
Beyond crafting exceptional wines, Zotovich Vineyards also offers visitors an unforgettable wine tasting experience. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
