Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery History

Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery, located in the heart of Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, California, is a renowned winery with a rich history dating back several decades. Established by Tom and Karen Zichichi, this family-owned and operated winery has become celebrated for producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of their vineyards.

The story begins in the early 1970s when Tom Zichichi, a San Francisco native with a deep appreciation for wine, purchased a mountain property known as Mount Aukum in El Dorado County. Inspired by the lush vineyards surrounding the area, Zichichi envisioned creating his own wine empire. However, due to the high elevation and challenging growing conditions, he deemed it impractical to establish a vineyard there.

In pursuit of his winemaking dream, Zichichi set his sights on Sonoma County, a region celebrated for its ideal grape-growing climate, diverse soils, and breathtaking landscapes. In 1978, he purchased a beautiful property on Dry Creek Road, primarily composed of a historic hop kiln dating back to the late 1800s. This location marked the birth of Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery.

With the acquisition of the property, Tom Zichichi set out to transform the land into a premier vineyard. The family planted their first grapevines, focusing on the region's flagship varietals, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the years, the commitment to sustainable farming practices and meticulous vineyard management techniques became the foundation for the winery's success.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery gained a reputation for producing exceptional wines, garnering accolades and a devoted following. The focus on quality, combined with a deep respect for the land and the environment, became the hallmark of the Zichichi winemaking philosophy.

In 2000, Tom and Karen's son, Matt Zichichi, returned to the family business after gaining experience at renowned wineries in Napa and Sonoma. With his return came a renewed energy and vision to take the winery to new heights. Matt embraced his father's dedication to sustainable farming practices and artisan winemaking, while also introducing innovative techniques to further enhance the quality and character of their wines.

Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery sources grapes from their estate vineyards in Dry Creek Valley. These vineyards, blessed with well-drained soils and the proximity to the Russian River, provide the perfect foundation for producing wines that express the unique personality of the region. The careful selection of high-quality fruit combined with a minimalist approach to winemaking allows the Zichichi wines to truly shine.

Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery is best known for their Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Their Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel is highly sought after, exhibiting rich, concentrated flavors of dark berries, balanced by elegant tannins and a lingering finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the power and complexity of the region, with bold fruit flavors, structured tannins, and a remarkable aging potential.

Beyond their flagship varietals, Zichichi also produces limited quantities of Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and a Bordeaux-style blend called "The Estate." Each wine is crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, showcasing the unique characteristics of the vineyard and the vintage.

Over the years, Zichichi Family Vineyard & Winery has remained true to its roots, producing wines that showcase the essence of the Dry Creek Valley terroir. This dedication to quality, paired with a commitment to sustainability, has earned them a well-deserved place among the esteemed wineries of California. By blending tradition and innovation, the Zichichi family continues to create exceptional wines that captivate wine enthusiasts and tell the story of their remarkable winery.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
