Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards & Winery History

Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards & Winery is a renowned family-owned winery located in the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Established in 1996 by Jim and Judy Schultze, the winery has garnered a stellar reputation for producing exceptional, artisanal wines that beautifully express the unique terroir of their estate vineyards.

The story of Windy Oaks began when Jim and Judy, both successful professionals in Silicon Valley, decided to pursue their shared passion for wine and agriculture. They embarked on an extensive search for a suitable piece of land, scouting various regions across California. Eventually, their quest led them to a picturesque site nestled in Corralitos, a small town in the southern part of Santa Cruz County.

The property, once an orchard, captivated the Schultzes with its ideal micro-climate and well-drained soils – both crucial factors for premium grape cultivation. Here, cool ocean breezes from the nearby Monterey Bay, paired with the protection offered by the Santa Cruz Mountains, create a perfect environment for nurturing high-quality grapes.

In 1996, the Schultzes purchased the land and officially founded Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards & Winery. They planted their first vines that same year, focusing on Burgundian grape varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The couple's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices immediately became evident. They embraced organic farming techniques, eschewing herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers.

The early vintages of Windy Oaks wines gained critical acclaim, quickly establishing the winery as a rising star in California's thriving wine scene. Jim and Judy's dedication to quality craftsmanship and their deep reverence for the land have remained at the forefront of their winemaking philosophy.

Over the years, Windy Oaks has expanded its vineyard holdings, acquiring additional properties in the esteemed Santa Cruz Mountains AVA (American Viticultural Area). These vineyards, strategically located across various elevations and soil types, contribute to the winery's extensive portfolio of compelling wines.

Despite their growth, the Schultzes have deliberately kept Windy Oaks small and focused on limited production, prioritizing quality and individual attention to each vine and barrel. Their dedication to terroir-driven winemaking shines through in every bottle they produce, reflecting the distinct character of each vineyard site.

Today, Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards & Winery continues to captivate wine enthusiasts with their exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varietals. The winery's commitment to sustainable practices has earned it organic certification from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), showcasing their devotion to both environmental stewardship and producing wines of the highest caliber.

Visitors to the winery are treated to not only exquisite wines but also stunning views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards. The Schultzes warmly welcome guests, offering them insight into their winemaking process and a glimpse into the beauty and tranquility of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards & Winery stands as a testament to the Schultzes' unwavering passion, hard work, and commitment to crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of their beloved Santa Cruz Mountains. With each vintage, they continue to showcase the extraordinary wines that this captivating region has to offer, solidifying their place among California's most esteemed wineries.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
