Twomey Cellars
History
Twomey Cellars, a renowned winery hailing from the beautiful wine regions of California, has an intriguing history rooted in the pursuit of crafting exceptional wines. Established in 1999, Twomey Cellars is a sibling winery of the esteemed Silver Oak Cellars, renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
The story of Twomey Cellars begins with the vision of two talented individuals, brothers Tim and David Duncan, who together sought to explore the potential of other grape varietals beyond Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by their successful endeavor at Silver Oak Cellars, where they had honed their winemaking skills and established a strong reputation, the brothers embarked on a new adventure.
In their quest to showcase the distinctive qualities of varietals such as Merlot and Pinot Noir, Tim and David Duncan acquired a small vineyard property in Calistoga, Napa Valley, and named it the Soda Canyon Ranch. This site, blessed with a unique microclimate and diverse soils, provided the ideal foundation for Twomey's winemaking aspirations.
With their passion for producing exceptional wines, the Duncans set out to craft high-quality, well-balanced wines that would capture the essence of these grape varietals. They employed a meticulous approach, combining traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations to create wines of great finesse and elegance.
While the establishment of the Soda Canyon Ranch vineyard marked Twomey's entrance into the wine world, the winery's true story was just beginning. Seeking to expand their grape sourcing options and explore new terroirs, the Duncans later acquired additional vineyards in specific regions known for their excellence in growing Pinot Noir and Merlot grapes.
In an effort to harness the unique expression of Pinot Noir, Twomey Cellars drew upon the cool climate and maritime influence of Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County. Here, the winery's talented team carefully selects and harvests grapes, ensuring that only the finest fruit is used in their winemaking processes.
For their Merlot production, Twomey Cellars ventured to California's iconic Napa Valley, where they have sourced grapes from renowned vineyards in the Oakville and St. Helena regions. These vineyards, known for their exceptional Merlot offerings, provide the winery with fruit of remarkable quality and character.
With their diverse selection of vineyards and the dedication of their skilled winemakers, Twomey Cellars has consistently pushed the boundaries of winemaking excellence. The winery embraces a minimal intervention approach, allowing the inherent qualities of the grapes and the unique characteristics of each vineyard site to shine through in the final wines.
Over the years, Twomey Cellars has gained the admiration of wine enthusiasts and critics alike. Their commitment to crafting wines that exemplify the distinctiveness of each varietal has proven successful, ushering the winery into the ranks of some of California's most respected producers.
Today, Twomey Cellars continues to produce limited-production wines that showcase the beauty and complexity of Pinot Noir and Merlot, capturing the essence of the diverse California terroirs from which they are sourced. With every bottle, Twomey Cellars seeks to transport wine lovers on a sensory journey and offer an unrivaled tasting experience that exemplifies the artistry and dedication that goes into their winemaking philosophy.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
