Trentadue Winery History

Trentadue Winery is a family-owned and operated winery located in the picturesque Alexander Valley region of Sonoma County, California. Established in 1959 by Leo and Evelyn Trentadue, the winery has a rich history that spans several generations and is deeply rooted in the traditions of winemaking in the region.

The Trentadue family's journey into winemaking began when Leo Trentadue, a first-generation Italian immigrant, moved to California in the early 1950s. With a background in farming and a passion for viticulture, Leo set his sights on creating a winery that would showcase the potential of the Alexander Valley terroir.

In 1959, Leo purchased a 208-acre ranch in the heart of Alexander Valley, and along with his wife Evelyn, began planting vineyards. They initially focused on growing traditional Italian grape varieties such as Zinfandel, Italian Barbera, and Carignane, which were well-suited to the region's climate and soil conditions.

Over the years, Trentadue Winery has not only expanded their vineyard holdings but also diversified their grape varietals. Today, the winery boasts over 200 acres of vineyards, which include a diverse range of grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petite Sirah.

Leo Trentadue and his son, Victor Trentadue, worked tirelessly to establish themselves as pioneers in the Alexander Valley wine industry. They experimented with different winemaking techniques and grape blends, always striving to produce high-quality wines with distinct flavors that reflected the unique characteristics of the region.

In the 1970s, Trentadue Winery gained recognition for their exceptional red wines, particularly their Zinfandels, which stood out for their rich fruit flavors and smooth tannins. This success led to the expansion of their winery facility to accommodate the growing demand for their wines.

In the 1980s, Leo Trentadue passed the winemaking torch to his son Victor, who continued to build upon his father's legacy. Victor's passion and commitment to craftsmanship led Trentadue Winery to new heights, gaining acclaim both nationally and internationally for their exceptional wines.

Trentadue Winery has also played a crucial role in preserving the winemaking heritage of California. They are renowned for their efforts in preserving old-vine Carignane and other heritage grape varieties, which were in danger of being lost amidst changing consumer tastes. The winery has become a sanctuary for these rare grapevines, ensuring their survival and contributing to the diversity of California winemaking.

Today, Trentadue Winery stands as a testament to the family's dedication and passion for winemaking, with the third generation actively involved in the operations. Victor's two sons, Mark and Miroslav Trentadue, have taken on important roles in winemaking and vineyard management, respectively, carrying forward the family's traditions and commitment to producing exceptional wines.

Trentadue Winery continues to produce a wide range of wines, each reflecting the family's meticulous attention to detail, love for the land, and a commitment to sustainability. With their steadfast focus on quality, dedication to preserving traditional winemaking practices, and innovative spirit, Trentadue Winery remains an influential and beloved winery in the Alexander Valley region.

This comprehensive history of Trentadue Winery showcases the family's enduring commitment to excellence, pioneering spirit, and contributions to the California wine industry. Their legacy and continued success serve as an inspiration to future generations of winemakers, reminding us of the enduring power of tradition and passion in the world of wine.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
