History
Thacher Winery, located in the beautiful Westside Paso Robles region of California, has a rich and captivating history that dates back several decades. Founded by Sherman Thacher in 2004, this family-owned winery has quickly emerged as a notable player in the Central Coast's wine landscape.
The story of Thacher Winery begins with Sherman Thacher's deep-rooted connection to the winemaking tradition. Born into a farming family in the Santa Clara Valley, Sherman developed a profound appreciation for agriculture from an early age. It was during his time at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, commonly known as Cal Poly, that he discovered his passion for viticulture and enology.
Inspired by the potential of the Paso Robles region, Sherman and his wife Michelle purchased a property in the Adelaida District, an area known for its diverse microclimates and limestone-rich soils, which are ideal for growing premium-quality grapes. With a vision to create exceptional wines that showcased the distinct identity of their vineyards, they established Thacher Winery.
The winery's first vintage was released in 2007, marking the realization of Sherman and Michelle's dream. From the outset, their approach has been deeply rooted in sustainability, ensuring minimal impact on the environment while crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir they cultivate.
In addition to sustainable practices, Thacher Winery is also committed to working collaboratively with neighboring winemakers and farmers. This dedication to community integration is exemplified by their participation in the creation of the Historic Vineyard Society, an organization preserving old-vine vineyards in California. Thacher Winery actively sources grapes from several historic vineyards, ensuring these heritage sites remain protected and cherished.
Thacher Winery's portfolio is an impressive display of skillful winemaking and dedication to quality. Producing a range of wines, including Rhône varietals, Zinfandel, and Grenache, their offerings captivate wine enthusiasts with their complexity, balance, and expression of the region's unique character.

Visitors are invited to explore their tasting room, beautifully nestled among the vineyard-covered hills, where they can sample an array of wines and learn about Thacher's winemaking practices directly from the knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Looking towards the future, Thacher Winery continues to evolve and innovate. The next generation of the Thacher family, Sherman and Michelle's children, are actively involved in the winery's operations, helping to drive its ongoing success and ensuring a smooth transition into the future.
Thacher Winery's journey illustrates the incredible passion and dedication that goes into crafting exceptional wines. From Sherman Thacher's early connection to the land to the family's commitment to sustainability and community, every aspect of this winery's history is intertwined with their love for the craft. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
