Storrs Winery
History
Storrs Winery, located in the picturesque Santa Cruz Mountains, is a gem among California wineries with a rich and fascinating history that spans over four decades. The winery was founded by Stephen and Pamela Storrs in 1978, with a vision to produce exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
Stephen Storrs, a San Francisco native with a passion for wine, had a career as a fine arts photographer before delving into the world of winemaking. In pursuit of his winemaking dreams, he honed his skills at UC Davis, studying enology and viticulture. With his newfound knowledge, Stephen set his sights on the Santa Cruz Mountains, a region known for its diverse microclimates and distinctive soils.
The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA (American Viticultural Area) offers a challenging and rewarding environment for winemaking. The region's rugged terrain, proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and varied elevations create a multitude of microclimates, resulting in complex and nuanced wines. Stephen recognized the potential of this region and believed that the cool climate and unique terroir would lend itself well to growing premium quality grapes.
In the early years of Storrs Winery, Stephen and Pamela purchased a small property in the northern part of the Santa Cruz Mountains and began planting the first vines. They focused on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, two classic varietals that have since become synonymous with Storrs wines. As the winery grew, they expanded their vineyard holdings to include additional varietals such as Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Zinfandel.
From the beginning, Storrs Winery embraced sustainable farming practices, a philosophy deeply rooted in their respect for the land and commitment to producing high-quality wines. They implemented techniques such as cover cropping, integrated pest management, and minimal intervention in the winemaking process, allowing the grapes to express their unique characteristics without excessive manipulation.
In the 1990s, Stephen and Pamela's son, David Storrs, joined the family business, bringing his own passion for winemaking. David, like his father, sought to create wines with complexity, balance, and a true sense of place. With his innovative approach, he introduced new varietals to the Storrs portfolio, including GrĂ¼ner Veltliner, Roussanne, and Tempranillo. These additions showcased the winery's dedication to exploring and showcasing the full potential of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Over the years, Storrs Winery has garnered numerous accolades and critical acclaim for its wines. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship has earned them a loyal following of wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. In addition to producing their own estate-grown wines, Storrs Winery has also collaborated with other local growers, further enriching their portfolio and showcasing the diversity of the region.
Today, Storrs Winery remains a family-owned and operated business, with Stephen, Pamela, and David Storrs at the helm. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices and producing wines that reflect the Santa Cruz Mountains' character continues to be the driving force behind their success.
Visiting Storrs Winery is an unforgettable experience, with stunning views of the vineyards nestled among the redwoods, a warm and inviting tasting room, and a knowledgeable and passionate staff. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a novice explorer, Storrs Winery offers a captivating glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
