Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery History

Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery is nestled in the beautiful Sonoma Valley, California. This acclaimed winery has a rich and captivating history that dates back to the early 1980s.

The story of Stone Edge Farm begins with the Proprietors, Mac and Leslie McQuown. They are a passionate and visionary couple with a profound love for wine, food, and the land. Mac, a prominent businessman and financier, and Leslie, a renowned food and wine enthusiast, embarked on a quest to establish a world-class winery that would embody their values and aspirations.

In 1986, Mac and Leslie purchased a charming property adjacent to Sonoma Valley's Moon Mountain AVA. Nestled in the Mayacamas Mountain Range, this unique terroir provides the ideal conditions for growing premium wine grapes. The couple recognized the property's potential and enlisted highly regarded viticulturist Phil Coturri to help them cultivate their vineyards.

However, it wasn't until several decades later, in 2004, that Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery officially came to fruition. By this time, Mac and Leslie had acquired more land, bringing their estate to a total of 16 acres. They meticulously planted Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, along with Rhône varietals like Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre.

To ensure the utmost quality in their wines, the McQuowns brought on Jeff Baker as their winemaker. Baker, who had an impressive track record working with some of California's top wineries, shared their commitment to sustainable farming practices and traditional winemaking techniques. Under his guidance, Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery began producing its first vintage in 2005.

Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery quickly garnered critical acclaim for its exceptional wines. The winery's commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, coupled with their meticulous attention to detail, contributes to the production of wines with unparalleled elegance, complexity, and balance.

Beyond winemaking, Stone Edge Farm is also known for its commitment to the land and community. The McQuowns have implemented numerous sustainable farming practices on their estate, including cover cropping, composting, and water conservation techniques. They aim to preserve and enhance the natural environment while showcasing the unique character of their Sonoma Valley terroir.

In addition to their winemaking endeavors, Stone Edge Farm is a working organic farm that produces fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and honey. The property also features a state-of-the-art culinary center, where the McQuowns host farm-to-table events, cooking classes, and wine tastings.

The legacy of Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery continues to grow as the McQuowns nurture and expand their vineyard holdings. They remain dedicated to producing exceptional wines that reflect the beauty and bounty of the Sonoma Valley. With their unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and community, Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery stands as a true testament to the remarkable possibilities of California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
