History
Starfield Vineyards is a prestigious winery located in the mesmerizing Napa Valley region of California. Established in 1995 by the visionary entrepreneur, Thomas Hogan, Starfield Vineyards has become renowned for its exceptional wines and commitment to producing some of the finest small-lot Bordeaux-style blends in California.
The compelling story of Starfield Vineyards begins with Thomas Hogan's unwavering passion for wine and his desire to establish a winery that would truly exemplify the terroir and elegance of Napa Valley. After years of searching for the perfect vineyard location, Hogan stumbled upon a beautiful parcel of land nestled amidst the rolling hills of the renowned Oak Knoll District.
Hogan recognized the immense potential of this land due to its unique microclimate, diverse soils, and proximity to the cooling breezes of the San Pablo Bay. Enthralled by the promise of this site, he acquired the vineyard and embarked on a journey to create wines that would capture the essence of the Napa Valley.
In the early years, Hogan meticulously studied the terroir, experimenting with different grape varieties, clones, and viticultural techniques to understand how best to express the vineyard's character in his wines. Through this tireless pursuit of perfection, he discovered that the vineyard was particularly well-suited for Bordeaux varietals, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
Using this newfound knowledge, Hogan meticulously cultivated the vineyard, managing it with utmost care and implementing sustainable farming practices to enhance the environmental harmony of the site. With time, the vineyard flourished, and the grapes achieved optimal ripeness, purity, and complexity, offering a superb foundation for crafting premium wines.
The first vintage of Starfield Vineyards was released to critical acclaim in 2000, showcasing Hogan's unwavering commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality that truly reflected the unique terroir of the Oak Knoll District. The wines were praised for their elegance, balance, and richness, captivating the palates of enthusiasts and experts alike.
Since its inception, Starfield Vineyards has garnered numerous accolades and prestigious awards, solidifying its position amongst the most esteemed wineries in the Napa Valley. At Starfield Vineyards, the winemaking philosophy centers around minimal intervention, allowing the intrinsic qualities of the grapes to shine. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. The winery employs traditional winemaking techniques, including extended maceration, careful oak aging, and gentle handling to preserve the delicate flavors and characteristics of the wines.
Today, Starfield Vineyards continues to evolve and thrive under the guidance of Thomas Hogan's son, William Hogan, who inherited his father's passion and dedication to crafting exceptional wines. The winery remains committed to its founding principles, producing limited quantities of handcrafted wines that reflect the rich heritage and unique terroir of the Oak Knoll District.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
