South Coast Winery Resort & Spa History

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, established in 2001, is a prominent winery nestled in the heart of Temecula Valley, California. Its rich history dates back even further, rooted in the pioneering spirit of the region's viticulture.

The story of South Coast Winery began in the late 1960s when visionary land developer Ray Morton recognized the immense potential for winemaking in Temecula Valley. He purchased a substantial parcel of land and planted the region's first vineyards, determined to make quality wines in Southern California.

Morton's passion and commitment to winemaking laid the foundation for what would eventually become South Coast Winery. Working tirelessly, he experimented with different varietals and viticultural techniques, learning from the challenges and successes that came with cultivating grapes in this emerging wine region.

In the 1980s, Jim Carter, a seasoned entrepreneur and wine enthusiast, acquired Morton's vineyard. He expanded the vineyard, focusing on varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel. Carter dreamed of establishing a world-class winery in Temecula, capitalizing on its unique microclimate and fertile soils.

Carter's dream became a reality when he joined forces with his longtime friend and expert winemaker Jon McPherson in 2001. Combining their expertise, they transformed the vineyard into South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, a distinctive destination offering exceptional wines, luxurious accommodations, and unrivaled hospitality.

The journey didn't come without its challenges. Carter and McPherson had to overcome the skepticism surrounding wine production in Southern California. Conventional wisdom held that only Northern California was suitable for winemaking. However, their unwavering determination and belief in Temecula Valley's potential pushed them to persevere.

South Coast Winery soon gained recognition for its exceptional wines, characterized by their intricate flavors, balance, and sense of place. The winery's devotion to quality and sustainable practices garnered numerous accolades, cementing its reputation as an influential winery in the region and beyond.

To accommodate visitors seeking an immersive experience, South Coast Winery expanded its offerings beyond wine tasting. In 2004, a luxurious resort and spa were added, making it the first full-service winery resort in Southern California. Guests could indulge in tranquil accommodations, pamper themselves with spa treatments, and savor gourmet dining experiences amidst the beautiful vineyard landscape.

Over the years, South Coast Winery has continued to innovate and invest in its facilities. In 2011, the winery completed a stunning expansion, incorporating a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, event spaces, and additional guest rooms. The commitment to excellence extends from the vineyards to the modern winemaking techniques employed, ensuring consistency and quality in every bottle.

Today, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa stands as a beacon of achievement in the Temecula Valley wine industry. Its award-winning wines, exquisite accommodations, and dedication to sustainable practices have made it a favorite destination for wine enthusiasts, oenophiles, and travelers seeking a memorable experience.

As South Coast Winery continues to thrive, it remains a testament to the pioneers who dared to believe that exceptional wines could be crafted in Southern California. Through passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to quality, South Coast Winery has transformed Temecula Valley into a must-visit wine destination, solidifying its place as a viticultural gem in the Golden State.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
