This breadth of options allows visitors to embark on an exciting tasting journey, exploring an array of flavor profiles and finding the perfect match for their palate.
Furthermore, Sonoma Valley Portworks embraces sustainable winemaking practices, emphasizing a deep respect for the environment and local community. They strive to minimize their ecological footprint through measures such as organic farming, water conservation, and packaging choices that focus on recyclability and reusability. Sonoma Valley Portworks
History
Sonoma Valley Portworks is a distinguished winery located in Sonoma Valley, California. Founded in 1997 by Bill Reading, this winery has gained a stellar reputation for producing exceptional port-style wines with a touch of California innovation. The unique focus on port-style wines sets Sonoma Valley Portworks apart from traditional wineries, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking something extraordinary.
The story of Sonoma Valley Portworks traces back to Bill Reading's love for fortified wines. Bill, a wine lover and food industry veteran, had a vision to create world-class ports in California that embodied the characteristics of the renowned ports from Portugal. Inspired by his travels to Portugal's Douro Valley, famous for its port production, he sought to bring the essence and elegance of these fortified wines to Sonoma Valley.
Bill's journey began by sourcing exceptional grapes from the finest vineyards across California. He carefully selected varietals like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Souzao, among others, which are commonly used in the production of classic ports. The meticulous vineyard selection allows Sonoma Valley Portworks to produce wines with remarkable depth, complexity, and aging potential.
To ensure optimal quality, all winemaking processes at Sonoma Valley Portworks are carried out with unparalleled care and expertise. After the harvest, the grapes are meticulously sorted and gently crushed. Fermentation is initiated, and once the desired level of sugar and alcohol is achieved, grape spirits are added to stop the fermentation process, resulting in a fortified wine. This technique, known as "fortification," is a hallmark of traditional port production.
One of the aspects that set Sonoma Valley Portworks apart is their innovative approach in crafting port-style wines. While paying homage to the traditional methods and grape varietals, they also introduce creative elements to their winemaking process. This includes blending different grape varieties, incorporating non-traditional varietals, and experimenting with barrel aging techniques. Such creative liberties allow for a range of port-style wines that cater to various palates and preferences.
The aging process is where Sonoma Valley Portworks truly shines. Oak barrels, carefully selected from renowned cooperages, are used for the maturation of their ports. The wines age gracefully, developing complex flavors of dried fruits, chocolate, nuts, and spices, while retaining their core fruit characteristics. The passion for excellence in aging is evident in each bottle produced by Sonoma Valley Portworks.
Beyond their extraordinary wines, Sonoma Valley Portworks offers an inviting and educational experience to visitors. The winery's tasting room provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere where guests can learn about the port-making process and sample a variety of their exceptional offerings. The knowledgeable staff guides visitors through a delightful journey of flavors, aromas, and the rich history of port production.
Sonoma Valley Portworks has garnered accolades and awards over the years for their unparalleled craftsmanship. Each vintage is a testament to their commitment to excellence and dedication to producing outstanding port-style wines that rival the best in the world. Whether it's a ruby port with its vibrant fruit flavors or a tawny port boasting subtle nuttiness and richness, Sonoma Valley Portworks is dedicated to offering an exceptional tasting experience that leaves a lasting impression on every wine enthusiast.
In conclusion, Sonoma Valley Portworks is an esteemed winery that carries the torch of tradition while embracing innovation. Through their passion for port-style wines, meticulous vineyard sourcing, and creative winemaking techniques, they have carved a unique place in the California wine industry. A visit to Sonoma Valley Portworks is an opportunity to savor the legacy of Portuguese port production artfully blended with the California spirit, resulting in wines of unparalleled quality and character.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
