Silver Fox Vineyards History

Silver Fox Vineyards is a storied winery nestled in the picturesque landscape of California. Founded in 1979, the winery has a rich history that spans over four decades and has become renowned for producing exceptional wines that capture the essence of the terroir.

The journey of Silver Fox Vineyards began when Charles and Margaret Roberts purchased a bucolic piece of land in Napa Valley. Drawn by the region's proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its unique microclimate, they saw great potential for cultivating premium grapes that would yield exquisite wines.

The Roberts family meticulously transformed the land into a vineyard, carefully selecting grape varietals that would thrive in the Napa Valley climate. With dedication and passion, they planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel vines, among others. The vineyard's elevation, slopes, and well-drained soil created perfect conditions for the grapes to flourish.

In the early years, Silver Fox Vineyards operated as a family-run operation, with Charles and Margaret Roberts and their children actively involved in every aspect of the winemaking process. They tirelessly tended to the vines, carefully pruned, and nurtured them throughout the seasons, ensuring the highest quality fruit.

As the reputation of Silver Fox Vineyards grew, so did the demand for their wines. The winery's remarkable success caught the attention of seasoned winemakers and investors, which led to a partnership with esteemed winemaker Michael Collins. With his wealth of knowledge and experience, Collins brought an innovative approach to winemaking while upholding the winery's commitment to quality and tradition.

Under Collins' guidance, Silver Fox Vineyards expanded its portfolio and crafted superb wines that captured the essence of the California terroir. From rich, bold reds to crisp, elegant whites, each bottle encapsulated the artistry and dedication of the winemakers.

Throughout the years, Silver Fox Vineyards has faced its share of challenges, including devastating wildfires and changing market dynamics. However, the winery has always prevailed, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to excellence. The Roberts family and their team of winemakers and viticulturists continually adapt to new techniques and technologies while honoring the traditional winemaking practices that have shaped their legacy.

Today, Silver Fox Vineyards stands as a true testament to the art and science of winemaking. Visitors to the winery are welcomed by rolling vineyards and a charming tasting room where they can sample the exceptional wines produced on-site. The winery also hosts educational tours and events, offering visitors a chance to learn about the winemaking process and experience the enchanting beauty of Napa Valley.

Silver Fox Vineyards remains deeply rooted in its history and committed to producing extraordinary wines that reflect the essence of their terroir. With each bottle, they share a part of their journey, inviting wine enthusiasts to savor the labor of love that goes into every sip.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
