Siduri Wines
History
Siduri Wines is a renowned winery located in Santa Rosa, California, specializing in producing high-quality Pinot Noir wines. Founded in 1994 by Adam Lee and Dianna Novy Lee, the winery has gained a reputation for crafting elegant and complex wines that exhibit a true sense of place and showcase the diverse vineyards of California.
The story of Siduri Wines began when Adam Lee, a wine enthusiast and a Texas native, moved to California in the early 1990s to pursue his passion for winemaking. Inspired by the allure of Pinot Noir, Adam set out on a mission to produce exceptional wines that captured the individuality and terroir of various vineyard sites. It was during this time that he met Dianna Novy Lee, a fellow wine lover with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of Pinot Noir.
With a shared vision and complementing skills, Adam and Dianna founded Siduri Wines in 1994. The name "Siduri" pays homage to an ancient Babylonian goddess of wine, believed to be the first professional winemaker in history. This name choice reflects the winery's commitment to crafting wines of exceptional quality and its reverence for winemaking traditions.
From the very beginning, Siduri Wines focused on sourcing grapes from renowned vineyards across California. They wanted to showcase the diverse terroir of the region and highlight the unique qualities each vineyard had to offer. Siduri Wines became known for their single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, a practice that has remained central to their winemaking philosophy.
In the early years, Siduri Wines primarily focused on vineyards in Sonoma County, including famous sites such as Pratt, Keefer Ranch, and Solomon Hills, among others. These vineyards provided the grapes for Siduri's inaugural vintage in 1994, which quickly gained critical acclaim and established the winery as a rising star in the world of Pinot Noir.
As the reputation of Siduri Wines grew, so did their ambition. The winery expanded its reach by sourcing grapes from renowned vineyards across California, including Santa Barbara County, Mendocino County, and the Russian River Valley. This approach has allowed Siduri to produce a rich and diverse portfolio of Pinot Noir wines that truly exemplify the unique nuances of each vineyard site.
Siduri Wines has always been committed to hands-on, artisanal winemaking. Adam and Dianna embrace traditional winemaking practices, paying close attention to every detail throughout the process. They prioritize gentle handling of the grapes and rely on a minimalist approach to ensure the wines reflect the true expression of the vineyard and fruit quality.
Over the years, Siduri Wines has achieved numerous accolades for their exceptional Pinot Noir wines. They have received high ratings from respected wine critics and publications, recognizing their consistent quality and dedication to crafting premium wines. Additionally, they have been applauded for their ability to capture the essence of each site, creating wines that showcase the intricacies of California terroir.
In 2015, Siduri Wines joined the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, allowing the winery to further expand its resources and foothold in the industry while still maintaining its commitment to producing small-lot, single-vineyard wines. This partnership has enabled Siduri to continue crafting exceptional Pinot Noirs while benefiting from the support and expertise of a renowned wine family.
Today, Siduri Wines continues to be an esteemed and respected name in the world of California winemaking. Through their dedication to showcasing the unique vineyard sites and their relentless pursuit of quality, Siduri Wines remains a guiding light for lovers of Pinot Noir seeking to experience the beauty and diversity of California's wine regions.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
