Sherwin Family Vineyards, nestled in the picturesque Napa Valley of California, boasts a rich and fascinating history that has contributed to its esteemed reputation in the world of winemaking. The winery's story dates back several decades, beginning with its founder, Dr. Robert Sherwin.
Dr. Sherwin, a successful ophthalmologist from the Bay Area, had nurtured a deep passion for wine since his early adulthood. In 1986, he made the bold decision to purchase a sprawling estate in the heart of the St. Helena AVA, known for its exceptional grape-growing conditions. This picturesque property not only captured Dr. Sherwin's heart but also became the foundation for what is now known as Sherwin Family Vineyards.
Soon after acquiring the property, Dr. Sherwin enlisted the expertise of renowned winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown to help bring his winemaking dreams to fruition. Brown, known for his innovative techniques and precise craftsmanship, became an integral part of the Sherwin Family Vineyards story, contributing greatly to its success.
The first vintage produced by Sherwin Family Vineyards was in 1996, and it received immediate acclaim, showcasing the exceptional quality and expression of the St. Helena terroir. Dr. Sherwin's vision and dedication to producing top-tier wines were highly evident in every bottle.
Over the years, the winery expanded its vineyard holdings, acquiring additional plots in prime Napa Valley appellations, such as Calistoga and Diamond Mountain. These vineyards were meticulously planted with various grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, among others, each selected to showcase the unique characteristics of the land.
Sherwin Family Vineyards also takes great pride in practicing sustainable and eco-friendly winemaking practices. From meticulously managing water resources to employing organic farming methods, the winery strives to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of the vineyards. This commitment to sustainability not only ensures the production of premium wines but also reflects the Sherwin family's respect for the environment.
Another significant milestone in the winery's history came in 2011 when Dr. Sherwin's daughter, Nicole, joined the family business. Inspired by her father's passion and commitment to excellence, Nicole became actively involved in all aspects of the winemaking process. Under her leadership, the winery has expanded its portfolio to include limited-edition releases and small-lot wines, further enhancing the winery's reputation for producing exceptional and exclusive offerings.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
