Furthermore, Sans Liege Wines is recognized for its commitment to sourcing grapes from unique vineyard sites. Curt meticulously selects vineyards with distinct microclimates and soils, which contribute to the complexity and diversity of the wines. Sans Liege Wines
History
Sans Liege Wines is a distinctive winery nestled in the heart of California's Central Coast region, renowned for its exceptional Rhône-style wines. Founded in 2006 by winemaker Curt Schalchlin, Sans Liege Wines has gained an esteemed reputation for producing unique and expressive blends that showcase the diverse terroir of the area.
Curt Schalchlin, a self-taught winemaker with a passion for the Rhône Valley in France, established Sans Liege with the belief that winemaking should be an art form free from the constraints of tradition. Inspired by his experiences traveling through Europe's vineyards, Schalchlin sought to craft wines that blurred the boundaries, combining Old World techniques with New World innovation.
At the heart of Sans Liege's winemaking philosophy lies the desire to create wines that tell a story, that communicate a sense of place and emotion. The name "Sans Liege," meaning "without allegiance" in French, embodies this ethos. It reflects the winery's commitment to crafting wines that are unapologetically unique and representative of the vineyards they come from.
The journey of Sans Liege Wines began with their first vintage in 2007, which featured a small collection of single-vineyard Syrah wines. These initial releases quickly gained critical acclaim and put Sans Liege on the map as one of the Central Coast's most exciting new wineries. The success and positive reception of these wines prompted Schalchlin to expand the portfolio over the years, incorporating other Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Viognier into his blends.
One of the key factors that sets Sans Liege apart is their commitment to sourcing grapes from distinctive vineyards across the Central Coast. Drawing upon a diverse range of microclimates and soil types, Schalchlin is able to create complex and nuanced wines that showcase the regional characteristics of each site. The vineyards selected by Sans Liege include some of the region's most esteemed and sought-after sites, such as James Berry Vineyard, Larner Vineyard, and Alta Colina Vineyard.
In the cellar, Schalchlin takes a hands-on approach to winemaking, using traditional techniques and minimal intervention to gently coax out the true potential of each grape variety. Fermentation is carried out using native yeasts, allowing the wines to develop a unique sense of place. Aging takes place in a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels, carefully selected to complement and enhance the individual characteristics of each wine.
Sans Liege Wines' portfolio is a testament to the winery's commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. From their flagship offering, "The Offering," a lavish blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, to their vibrant and aromatic white wine, "Cotes-du-Coast," each bottling offers a distinctive and captivating experience.
Over the years, Sans Liege Wines has consistently received high praise from critics and enthusiasts alike. Their wines have garnered numerous accolades, including high scores from respected publications such as Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. This recognition has solidified their position as one of California's premier producers of Rhône-style wines.
Today, Sans Liege continues to innovate and evolve, pushing the boundaries of winemaking while staying true to their original vision. With a dedication to crafting wines that express the unique terroir of the Central Coast, Sans Liege has etched its name into the tapestry of California winemaking, captivating palates and inspiring wine lovers around the world.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
