Sanford Winery
History
Sanford Winery, located in the renowned Santa Rita Hills appellation in California, holds a rich history that spans over five decades. Established in 1971 by entrepreneur Richard Sanford, Sanford Winery played a pivotal role in putting California's Central Coast on the global wine map.
Richard Sanford, a visionary pioneer, recognized the immense potential of the Santa Rita Hills region for wine production. He was captivated by its unique geography and climate, characterized by cool oceanic breezes and marine fog, making it ideal for cultivating grapes of exceptional quality.
In 1971, Richard Sanford, along with his high school friend Michael Benedict, purchased the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills. This vineyard, dating back to the late 1960s, became the foundation for Sanford Winery. The duo focused on planting exceptional grape varieties, including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which flourished in the region's cool climate.
Using sustainable and organic farming practices, Sanford Winery quickly gained a reputation for producing outstanding wines. Richard Sanford's dedication to quality and his passion for winemaking drove the winery's success. In particular, his mastery of Pinot Noir became legendary, as he explored different clones, vineyard sites, and winemaking techniques to unlock the full potential of the grape.
Sanford Winery's breakthrough came when they released their first vintage of Pinot Noir in 1976, which received critical acclaim and garnered national attention. This launch not only cemented the winery's reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir but also helped establish the Santa Rita Hills as a premier wine-growing region.
Throughout the years, Sanford Winery continued to evolve, fine-tuning their winemaking techniques and expanding their repertoire of exceptional wines. In 1981, they introduced their first Chardonnay, showcasing the region's ability to produce elegant white wines. The winery's commitment to sustainability led to them becoming the first winery in Santa Barbara County to earn Organic Certification for their vineyards.
In 2005, Sanford Winery underwent a significant ownership transition when the Terlato Wine Group, one of the most respected wine companies in the world, acquired the winery. Under the new ownership, Sanford Winery's legacy of producing exceptional wines remained intact, with a continued focus on sustainable practices and honoring the terroir of the Santa Rita Hills.
Today, Sanford Winery continues its legacy as a benchmark producer of cool-climate, estate-grown wines. With a diverse portfolio that includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and limited-production wines, they showcase the unique characteristics of the Santa Rita Hills in each bottle.
Visiting Sanford Winery allows wine enthusiasts to experience firsthand the beauty of the Santa Rita Hills and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each wine. The winery offers guided tours, tastings, and a chance to explore their breathtaking vineyards, providing a deeper understanding of the region's viticulture and winemaking philosophy.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
