San Pasqual Winery History

San Pasqual Winery has a rich and fascinating history that takes us back to the roots of winemaking in Southern California. Founded in 2009, this family-run winery is located in the heart of La Mesa, a charming city in San Diego County, California.

The story of San Pasqual Winery begins with a passionate winemaker named Mike McWilliams. With a lifelong love for wines and winemaking, Mike had a dream of starting his own winery. Inspired by the region's diverse microclimates, fertile soil, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, he chose La Mesa as the perfect location to turn his dream into reality.

The very first vineyard of San Pasqual Winery was planted in 2009 in the picturesque San Pasqual Valley, situated just a few miles away from the winery's current location. This valley is known for its warm days and cool nights, making it particularly favorable for growing high-quality wine grapes. The combination of the valley's unique climate, well-drained soil, and the expertise of San Pasqual's winemakers creates the perfect conditions for producing exceptional wines.

In the early years, San Pasqual Winery focused primarily on sourcing grapes from local farmers and vineyards within Southern California. This allowed them to showcase the diverse range of varietals grown in the region, including classic favorites like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as lesser-known gems such as Viognier, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese.

As the reputation of San Pasqual Winery grew, so did their ambition to create a truly unique wine experience for their customers. In 2013, they opened their urban winery and tasting room in downtown La Mesa, attracting locals and tourists alike. This expansion allowed visitors to witness the winemaking process firsthand, as the winemaking facilities formed an integral part of the tasting room.

The winemakers at San Pasqual Winery believe in hands-on craftsmanship and pay incredible attention to detail throughout the winemaking process. From meticulously handpicking the grapes to carefully blending and aging the wines, every step is handled with utmost care and commitment. This dedication to quality is evident in each bottle of San Pasqual wine and has earned them numerous accolades and awards over the years.

Beyond producing exceptional wines, San Pasqual Winery is deeply committed to sustainability. They employ environmentally friendly practices in their vineyard management and winemaking processes. This includes using organic and biodynamic farming techniques, minimizing waste, conserving water, and utilizing solar energy.

Throughout its history, San Pasqual Winery has continuously expanded its portfolio and experimentation with new winemaking techniques. They have also embraced the vibrant local community by hosting regular events, wine tastings, and wine education classes.

San Pasqual Winery's dedication to excellence, community engagement, and sustainable practices has made it a beloved and respected member of California's winemaking industry. It stands as a shining example of a family-owned winery that honors tradition while pushing the boundaries of winemaking innovation in Southern California.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
