San Marcos Creek History

San Marcos Creek Winery is a family-owned vineyard and winery located in the picturesque Paso Robles Wine Country of California. The rich history of this winery can be traced back several generations to its pioneer roots in the early 1900s.

The story of San Marcos Creek Winery begins with the vision and determination of the patriarch, Juan Pedro Roca, who immigrated to California from Spain in the early 1900s. Recognizing the immense potential of the fertile land in Paso Robles, Juan Pedro purchased a substantial parcel of land that would eventually become the foundation of the winery.

Initially, the Roca family cultivated the land for ranching and farming purposes. However, it was not until the late 1960s that the first vines were planted on the estate. Under the guidance of Juan Pedro's grandson, Anthony Roca, the winery took its inaugural steps towards becoming a prominent player in the Paso Robles wine scene.

In the following decades, San Marcos Creek Winery underwent significant expansion and development. Anthony Roca invested considerable time and resources into transforming the family estate into a state-of-the-art winery, focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The winery's commitment to quality, coupled with the ideal microclimate and diverse soils of Paso Robles, led to the production of exceptional wines that quickly gained recognition within the wine industry.

San Marcos Creek Winery's success is attributed not only to the expertise of its winemakers but also to the vineyard's unique terroir. Located within the renowned Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA), the winery's vineyards benefit from warm days, cool nights, and a wide range of soil types, which contribute to the complexity and distinct characteristics of the wines.

The winery specializes in handcrafted wines, with an emphasis on Bordeaux and Rhône varietals. Grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre are carefully cultivated, picked at optimal ripeness, and skillfully vinified to express the best qualities of each varietal.

Over the years, San Marcos Creek Winery has received numerous accolades and awards for its exceptional wines. The winery's commitment to excellence has led to an ever-growing fan base and a loyal following of wine enthusiasts from around the world.

In addition to producing premium wines, San Marcos Creek Winery offers a warm and inviting tasting room experience. Visitors can explore the scenic vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and taste an array of wines, all while enjoying panoramic views of the rolling hills of Paso Robles.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
