Rutherford Hill Winery
History
Rutherford Hill Winery, located in the heart of Napa Valley, California, is a renowned winery with a fascinating history that dates back several decades. Established in 1976, the winery has become synonymous with producing exceptional, award-winning wines, especially their signature Bordeaux varietals.
The story of Rutherford Hill Winery begins with its founder, Ernie Van Asperen. Originally from South Africa, Van Asperen immigrated to the United States with a vision of creating world-class wines. He believed that Napa Valley had the potential to rival the great wine regions of France, and he set his sights on crafting elegant, age-worthy wines that would showcase the unique terroir of the region.
Van Asperen's search for the perfect location led him to the Rutherford District of Napa Valley. This region, known for its distinct climate and soil composition, proved to be an ideal setting for growing premium grapes. Van Asperen believed that the cooler temperatures and well-drained soils of Rutherford were perfect for producing rich, complex wines with excellent aging potential.
With this vision in mind, Van Asperen purchased a modest 20-acre vineyard located on the eastern hills of Rutherford. He named his winery Rutherford Hill, paying homage to the area's topography and the winery's elevated position. Van Asperen quickly set out to cultivate his vineyard, focusing on planting traditional Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
In the early years, Van Asperen faced numerous challenges, but his perseverance and commitment paid off. His determination to craft exceptional wines led to critical acclaim and increasing recognition for Rutherford Hill Winery. As the winery's reputation grew, so did its production capacity. Additional vineyard land was acquired, expanding the estate to over 100 acres, providing a diverse range of terroirs and grape varieties to work with.
One of Rutherford Hill Winery's significant milestones came in 1986 when it became the pioneer of aging wines in small French oak barrels. This innovative technique, known as "Barrel Age," allowed the wines to develop complexity and elegance over an extended period. This approach garnered attention and ultimately influenced winemaking practices throughout the industry.
Over the years, Rutherford Hill Winery has continued to thrive, gaining a loyal following of wine enthusiasts who appreciate the winery's commitment to producing exceptional wines. In 1996, the winery joined forces with the Terlato family, renowned for their expertise in fine wines, creating a dynamic partnership that has further elevated the brand's reputation.
Today, Rutherford Hill Winery remains dedicated to crafting wines that reflect the unique character of the Napa Valley terroir. The winery's commitment to sustainable practices, including organic farming and environmentally-friendly production techniques, exemplifies their dedication to preserving the land for future generations.
Rutherford Hill Winery's portfolio consists of a wide range of wines, with their Bordeaux varietals remaining the cornerstone of their production. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc consistently showcase impeccable balance, complexity, and aging potential.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
