Rusack Vineyards
History
Rusack Vineyards is a renowned winery located in the beautiful Ballard Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County, California. The history of this esteemed winery dates back to the early 1990s when it was founded by Geoff and Alison Rusack.
Geoff and Alison were both passionate wine enthusiasts who desired to make premium, handcrafted wines that showcased the unique terroir of Santa Barbara's vineyards. While searching for the perfect location, they fell in love with Ballard Canyon, known for its limestone-rich soils, cool marine influences, and ideal growing conditions.
In 1995, the Rusacks acquired a historic property originally established as a family-run homestead in the 1880s. This property had a small vineyard that was planted with varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the potential of the land, the Rusacks decided to expand and planted additional grape varietals suited to the microclimate of the region, including Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
Their dedication to quality and commitment to sustainable farming practices quickly earned them a reputation for producing exceptional wines. They paid meticulous attention to every aspect of the winemaking process, from the vineyard management and grape selection to the gentle handling of grapes during harvest and the use of minimal intervention winemaking techniques.
Rusack Vineyards released its inaugural vintage in 1997 and experienced remarkable success right from the start. Their wines, particularly their Chardonnay and Syrah, were highly praised by critics, earning the winery a loyal following and several accolades. The wines showcased not only the richness and elegance of the varietals but also the distinct characteristics attributed to the unique climate and terroir of Ballard Canyon.
Over the years, Rusack Vineyards continued to refine their winemaking practices and expand their vineyard holdings. They recognized the potential of other exceptional vineyard sites, acquiring additional properties within Santa Barbara County, such as the esteemed Santa Catalina Vineyard. This expansion allowed them to experiment with different grape varieties and further express the diversity of the region through their wines.
Today, Rusack Vineyards remains a family-owned and operated winery, deeply rooted in the traditions of winemaking while embracing innovation. Geoff and Alison's son, Steven, has also joined the team, bringing his passion and expertise to the business. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
