At the heart of Rombauer Vineyards' success lies their commitment to crafting top-notch Chardonnay, which has become their flagship varietal. The winery sources its grapes from carefully selected vineyards across Carneros, where the cool and foggy climate contributes to the ideal growing conditions for Chardonnay. Beyond their celebrated Chardonnay, Rombauer Vineyards also produces other exceptional wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. What Makes Rombauer Vineyards Different From Other Nearby Wineries?

Rombauer Vineyards is truly a unique gem in the Californian winery scene, setting itself apart from others in numerous ways. From its rich history to its distinctive winemaking techniques, everything about Rombauer Vineyards exemplifies excellence and inspires a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking.

First and foremost, Rombauer Vineyards is known for its unparalleled commitment to quality. With a legacy spanning over three decades, the winery has consistently produced exceptional wines that have garnered remarkable recognition and a loyal following. This commitment to excellence can be traced back to the passion and vision of its founders, Koerner and Joan Rombauer, who laid the foundation for a winery that would uphold their family values and produce wines of the highest caliber.

One key distinguishing factor of Rombauer Vineyards is their unwavering dedication to sustainable farming practices. The winery takes a holistic approach to viticulture, implementing eco-friendly techniques that preserve the land's natural resources and maintain the long-term health of their vineyards. From minimizing water usage to embracing organic and biodynamic farming methods, Rombauer Vineyards ensures that their wines are not only delicious but also created in harmony with the environment.

Another standout feature of Rombauer Vineyards is their focus on unique grape varietals and winemaking processes. While many wineries in California tend to prioritize traditional varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, Rombauer Vineyards has a penchant for crafting wines from lesser-known varietals. They expertly produce remarkable Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petite Sirah wines that showcase the true potential of these underappreciated grapes.

Additionally, Rombauer Vineyards distinguishes itself through its use of innovative winemaking techniques that blend traditional methods with modern advancements. Their skilled winemakers have mastered the art of barrel aging, bringing forth complex flavors and textures that perfectly complement the unique characteristics of each varietal. The result is a portfolio of wines that are not only consistent and approachable but also possess a remarkable depth and complexity.

Furthermore, the Rombauer Vineyards experience extends beyond the wine itself. The winery is renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, creating a sense of community and fostering a true appreciation for the joy of wine. Visitors to Rombauer Vineyards can immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of Napa Valley while enjoying a range of tasting experiences, from intimate private tastings to informative tours that offer a glimpse into the winemaking process.

With every bottle they produce, Rombauer Vineyards continues to solidify its reputation as an extraordinary winery that captures the essence of California's viticultural excellence.

What Some Possible Concerns About Rombauer Vineyards ?

While Rombauer Vineyards is a highly regarded winery, there are a few aspects that some people may not appreciate:

1. Price Range: One common complaint about Rombauer Vineyards is that their wines can be quite expensive compared to other wineries in the region. This higher price point may deter some wine enthusiasts who are looking for more affordable options.

2. Crowds: Due to its popularity and reputation, Rombauer Vineyards can often get quite crowded, especially during peak times and weekends. This can lead to longer wait times for tastings and less personalized attention from staff members.

3. Limited Wine Selection: Some individuals may find that Rombauer Vineyards has a relatively smaller selection of wines compared to other wineries. While they specialize in Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, those seeking a wider variety of varietals may feel that their options are somewhat limited.

4. Lack of Vineyard Views: Unlike some wineries that offer stunning vineyard views, Rombauer Vineyards' tasting room is not situated within the vineyards themselves. Therefore, those hoping to sip their wine amidst picturesque vineyard scenery may feel slightly disappointed.

5. Accessibility: Located in St. Helena in Napa Valley, Rombauer Vineyards may not be easily accessible for everyone. Its location can be a bit of a drive for visitors staying outside the Napa area, making it less convenient for those looking to explore multiple wineries in a day.

It's important to note that these criticisms are subjective and may not reflect everyone's opinion, as many people appreciate the quality of Rombauer Vineyards' wines and the overall experience they offer.

Rombauer Vineyards History

Rombauer Vineyards, renowned for its world-class, award-winning wines, has a rich and captivating history that dates back to the mid-20th century. Founded by Koerner and Joan Rombauer in 1980, this family-owned winery has become one of California's most esteemed and influential producers.

The Rombauer family's journey into winemaking can be traced back to the 1930s when Koerner's great aunt, Irma Rombauer, authored the acclaimed cookbook "The Joy of Cooking." This iconic publication not only established Irma as a culinary expert but also sparked her family's interest in food and wine.

Koerner and Joan, inspired by their mutual passion for wine, relocated from Illinois to the picturesque Napa Valley in 1972. Determined to create their own legacy in the wine world, the Rombauers found their bona fide opportunity when they purchased the St. Helena hillside property in 1980, which would later become the site of Rombauer Vineyards.

Initially, the Rombauers solely cultivated and sold grapes to acclaimed wineries like Conn Creek and Sterling Vineyards. However, in 1982, they decided to venture into winemaking themselves, unveiling their inaugural vintage, a 1980 Chardonnay. The wine's exceptional quality and distinct style marked the beginning of Rombauer Vineyards' rise to prominence.

Soon, Rombauer Chardonnay gained a reputation for its opulent and fruit-forward character, contrasting the more restrained and oak-laden styles prevalent at the time. The wine's luscious flavors, rich texture, and balanced acidity quickly captivated wine enthusiasts, propelling Rombauer Vineyards into the limelight.

As demand surged, the Rombauers expanded their vineyard holdings. They acquired additional properties in the cooler Carneros region of southern Napa Valley, known for its ideal grape-growing conditions. This strategic move allowed them to produce exceptional Chardonnay and other varietals like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, further diversifying their portfolio.

Over the years, Rombauer Vineyards garnered numerous accolades and critical acclaim. Their commitment to quality and crafting wines of exceptional character has earned them a dedicated following and solidified their reputation as a top-tier winery. Today, the second and third generations of the Rombauer family continue to guide the winery, staying true to the traditions set forth by Koerner and Joan.

Beyond their signature Chardonnay, Rombauer Vineyards produces an array of remarkable wines, including rich and aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon, velvety Merlot, vibrant Zinfandel, elegant Sauvignon Blanc, and bold red blends. Their pursuit of excellence extends not only to the vineyards but also to environmentally sustainable practices, ensuring the preservation of the land and the community.

While Rombauer Vineyards has grown and evolved over the decades, the family's unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional wines remains at the core of their philosophy. Visitors to the winery can expect warm hospitality, breathtaking views, and an immersive experience that showcases the Rombauer legacy in every glass.

In conclusion, the history of Rombauer Vineyards is one of passion, dedication, and a desire to create exceptional wines that captivate and delight. From humble beginnings to global recognition, the Rombauer family's commitment to quality and their unique winemaking style have firmly established them as one of Napa Valley's most revered wineries.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
