What Makes Robert Keenan Winery
Different From Other Nearby Wineries?
Robert Keenan Winery stands out among other wineries in California due to its exceptional commitment to quality winemaking, unique terroir, sustainable practices, and rich history.
First and foremost, what sets Robert Keenan Winery apart is its unwavering dedication to producing high-quality wines. Since its establishment in 1974, the winery has prioritized artisanal winemaking techniques, emphasizing meticulous attention to detail at every stage of the winemaking process. This dedication to quality is demonstrated in their limited production approach, where the focus is on crafting small batches of exceptional wines rather than mass production.
The winery's location on Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley region provides a distinctive terroir, contributing to the uniqueness of their wines. The mountainous terrain, diverse soil types, and elevation create a microclimate that favors the cultivation of premium grapes. The combination of warm days and cool nights allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex flavors and maintaining a natural acidity that lends itself to elegant and balanced wines.
In addition to their commitment to quality winemaking, Robert Keenan Winery places a strong emphasis on sustainable practices. The estate is certified as sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), indicating their commitment to resource conservation, ecosystem preservation, and social responsibility. They utilize solar power to meet their energy needs, maintain biological diversity in their vineyards, and minimize their use of water, pesticides, and herbicides. This sustainability-driven approach not only benefits the environment but also contributes to the overall quality and character of the wines produced.
Moreover, the winery has a rich history that adds to its distinctiveness. Robert Keenan Winery was founded by Robert Keenan, a former mathematics professor who fell in love with winemaking and purchased the property on Spring Mountain. Over the years, the winery has evolved and expanded, while still remaining family-owned and operated. This continuity allows for a deep understanding of the land, the vines, and the winemaking traditions, resulting in a sense of authenticity and a genuine passion for producing exceptional wines.
In summary, Robert Keenan Winery stands out among other wineries in California due to its unwavering commitment to quality winemaking, unique terroir, sustainable practices, and rich history. These elements combine to create wines that are not only delicious and distinctive but also reflect the heart and soul of this remarkable winery.

Robert Keenan Winery
History
The Robert Keenan Winery, nestled high in the Mayacamas mountain range in Napa Valley, California, has a rich and captivating history that dates back to the late 19th century. Let's delve into the fascinating story of this esteemed winery.
The roots of Robert Keenan Winery trace back to 1878 when it was originally founded by Henry Bothin as the "Spring Mountain Vineyard." This expansive estate, totaling 280 acres, included both vineyards and a magnificent Victorian-style mansion called the "Bollinger Mansion." For several years, the estate thrived under Bothin's management, producing high-quality wines that gained recognition and acclaim.
However, as with many wineries, the Spring Mountain Vineyard went through a series of ownership changes and challenges over the years. In the early 1970s, it fell into disrepair and was eventually purchased in 1974 by Californian-born Robert Keenan. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for the estate, one that would eventually bring it to the forefront of the Napa Valley wine scene.
Robert Keenan, a successful insurance executive, decided to pursue his lifelong passion for winemaking and embarked on a journey to revive the vineyard and restore its former glory. With a vision of crafting wines that would reflect the unique terroir of the Spring Mountain District, Keenan set out to replant the vineyards and upgrade the winemaking facilities.
Over the next few decades, Keenan's dedication and commitment to quality propelled the winery toward new heights. Through meticulous farming practices, including sustainable farming and organic techniques, Keenan ensured that the vineyards produced grapes of exceptional quality. The rugged, mountainous terroir of the estate, with its well-drained volcanic soils, steep slopes, and cooler microclimates, proved to be ideal for growing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals.
With each passing vintage, the reputation of Robert Keenan Winery grew, thanks to the consistently outstanding wines it produced. Keenan's commitment to excellence was further recognized and acknowledged when the winery achieved its first 90+ point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate in the early 1990s. This critical acclaim laid the foundation for the winery's continued success.
In the early 2000s, Keenan passed the reins of the winery to his children, Michael and Jennifer, who shared their father's love for winemaking and his dedication to crafting exceptional wines. Under their leadership, the winery underwent further modernization and expansion.
Today, Robert Keenan Winery stands as a remarkable testament to the unwavering passion and pursuit of excellence set forth by the Keenan family. The estate encompasses around 50 acres of vineyards, where primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah are grown. The production is intentionally limited to maintain strict quality control, resulting in wines that truly exemplify the unique characteristics of the Spring Mountain District.
Visiting Robert Keenan Winery is an experience like no other. The picturesque vineyards, stunning panoramic views of Napa Valley, and the warm hospitality offered by the Keenan family and their team make for an unforgettable wine-tasting experience. Visitors can explore the historic Bollinger Mansion, which now houses the winery's tasting room, and gain insight into the winemaking process through informative tours and tastings.
As the legacy of innovation, determination, and passion lives on, Robert Keenan Winery remains a beloved and respected name in the world of California winemaking. With each sip of their meticulously crafted wines, one can taste the unyielding commitment to quality that has defined the winery for over four decades.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
