What Makes Rivino Winery
Different From Other Nearby Wineries?
Rivino Winery stands out among the vast array of wineries in California for several reasons, making it a unique and exceptional destination for wine enthusiasts.
First and foremost, Rivino Winery prides itself on its commitment to sustainability and organic farming practices. Unlike many other wineries in the region, Rivino follows environmentally-friendly methods, making efforts to minimize its impact on the land and ensure the production of high-quality, eco-conscious wines. The winery utilizes solar power to meet a significant portion of its energy needs, conserves water resources by employing drip irrigation techniques, and promotes biodiversity through cover cropping and cultivating native plants. These sustainable practices not only contribute to the preservation of the region's scenic beauty but also result in exceptional wines with a distinct terroir expression.
Another aspect that sets Rivino Winery apart is its unique geographical location. Situated just 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Mendocino wine region, Rivino benefits from cool coastal influences that create a microclimate ideal for grape cultivation. The combination of warm days and cool nights allows the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with balanced acidity, vibrant flavors, and a distinct sense of place.
Rivino Winery also stands out due to its focus on lesser-known grape varietals. While many wineries in California predominantly feature popular grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay, Rivino embraces more unconventional varieties such as Sangiovese, Barbera, and Viognier. This commitment to showcasing unique and rare varietals allows visitors to experience a broader range of wine styles, expanding their palates and knowledge of California wines.
Additionally, Rivino Winery offers a memorable tasting experience. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff at the winery are passionate about the wines they produce and are dedicated to providing an educational and enjoyable visit for guests. The tasting room itself boasts beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards, providing a serene and relaxed ambiance to savor the wines and take in the picturesque scenery.
Furthermore, Rivino hosts various events and activities throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to engage with the winemaking process beyond the traditional tasting experience. Guests can participate in vineyard tours, winemaking workshops, and even grape picking during harvest season. These immersive experiences give wine enthusiasts a deeper understanding of the winemaking craft and foster a connection between them and the vineyard.
In summary, Rivino Winery in Mendocino County stands out for its commitment to sustainability, its unique coastal location, its focus on lesser-known grape varietals, its exceptional tasting experience, and its array of engaging events. These factors combine to create a truly memorable and distinct wine destination for both connoisseurs and those looking to explore the world of California wines.

The story of Rivino Winery dates back to the mid-20th century when the land, now known as Rivino, was initially acquired by the charming and visionary patriarch, Dr. Sergio Axelrud. Driven by his insatiable curiosity and appreciation for the abundant natural beauty of Mendocino County, Dr. Axelrud sought to transform the untamed land into a haven for viticulture.
Fascinated by the region's diverse microclimates and nutrient-rich soil, Dr. Axelrud enlisted the expertise of renowned viticulturalists and winemakers to assess the potential of this land. With the mentorship of these experts and tireless dedication, Dr. Axelrud planted the first grapevines on the property in the late 1960s.
Challenged by the cool climate conditions characteristic of Mendocino County, Dr. Axelrud and subsequent generations of the family pursued an innovative approach to winemaking, harnessing the unique terroir to their advantage. Throughout the decades, Rivino Winery became known for its forward-thinking techniques and commitment to sustainability, blending tradition with modernity to produce exquisite wines.
The journey of Rivino Winery took a significant turn in the early 2000s when the ownership transitioned to the capable hands of the Axelrud siblings, Maryann and Jason. Harnessing their collective knowledge and passion, the sibling duo embarked on a mission to elevate Rivino Winery to new heights.
Under Maryann and Jason's guidance, Rivino Winery underwent extensive renovations to modernize the facilities, ensuring that every aspect of the winemaking process remained top-notch. Recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability, the siblings implemented numerous eco-conscious practices, including solar energy utilization and water conservation measures, further solidifying Rivino as a steward of the land.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
