Quady Winery History

Quady Winery, situated in California's beautiful San Joaquin Valley, has a rich and remarkable history that spans over four decades. Founded in 1975 by renowned winemaker Andrew Quady and his wife Laurel, the winery stands as a testament to their pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication to producing exceptional wines.

Andrew Quady, with a background in chemistry and a deep passion for wine, embarked on his winemaking journey by experimenting with various flavors and techniques for his initial homemade wines. He quickly recognized the potential of the region to produce high-quality wines from unique grape varietals, sparking his determination to establish his own winery.

Quady Winery's early days were marked by Andrew's experimentation with a range of grape varieties, including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane. However, it was not until he discovered the joys of fortified wines that the winery truly found its niche and achieved significant recognition.

In 1977, Andrew introduced Vya Vermouth, a California-style vermouth made from Orange Muscat grapes grown in the San Joaquin Valley. Vya Vermouth, with its captivating aromas and vibrant flavors, quickly found a devoted following, garnering critical acclaim and establishing Quady Winery as a trailblazer in the world of vermouth production.

Building on the success of Vya Vermouth, Quady Winery further expanded its portfolio with the release of dessert wines that would become the hallmark of the winery. Andrew's experimentation with the Orange Muscat grape variety led to the creation of the iconic Essensia Orange Muscat and Elysium Black Muscat wines. These luscious, sweet wines enthralled wine enthusiasts with their aromatic profiles, vibrant fruit flavors, and balanced acidity, earning numerous accolades and solidifying Quady Winery's reputation for producing exceptional dessert wines.

Continuing to push boundaries, the Quady team developed the innovative Electra Moscato, a semi-sparkling wine that captured the essence of Orange Muscat with its refreshing effervescence and irresistible sweetness. Electra Moscato quickly gained popularity among younger wine drinkers, serving as an introduction to the world of wines and expanding Quady Winery's reach.

Throughout its history, Quady Winery has remained dedicated to sustainable viticulture practices. The winery sources grapes from select vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley, working closely with growers to ensure the highest quality fruit. Embracing environmentally responsible practices, they strive to minimize their ecological footprint while showcasing the rich flavors and distinctive characteristics of the region's grapes.

Over the years, Quady Winery’s wines have continued to captivate wine lovers and critics alike, receiving countless awards and accolades. With each bottle produced, the winery remains committed to crafting unique, terroir-driven wines that exemplify the heritage and potential of the San Joaquin Valley.

Today, Quady Winery stands as a testament to Andrew Quady's pioneering vision, innovative approach, and unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
