Plateau Vineyards History

Plateau Vineyards is a renowned winery nestled in the heart of California's picturesque wine country. Founded in 1978 by the visionary winemaker, Joseph Williams, Plateau Vineyards has a rich history that spans over four decades. This family-owned winery has consistently produced exceptional wines, which have garnered numerous accolades and a loyal following among wine enthusiasts.

The story of Plateau Vineyards begins with Joseph Williams's passion for winemaking. Inspired by his travels throughout Europe and his deep appreciation for the diverse terroir of California, Williams dreamt of creating wines that showcased the unique characteristics of the region. Armed with a strong determination and a vision to produce world-class wines, he decided to establish his own winery in the famed Napa Valley.

Williams recognized the immense potential of the land in this region and carefully selected a picturesque plateau nestled between the rolling hills. This elevated site provided the perfect combination of well-drained soils, abundant sunlight, and cool breezes, creating an ideal microclimate for viticulture. With a keen eye for detail, he meticulously planted vineyards with a variety of noble grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah, among others.

From the very beginning, Williams strived to produce wines that would stand out among their peers, drawing on traditional winemaking techniques combined with innovative practices. He handcrafted each vintage with utmost care and attention, embracing the notion that great wines are made in the vineyard. His dedication to sustainable farming practices and respect for the environment soon garnered wide recognition from both critics and consumers alike.

Plateau Vineyards quickly gained prominence in the wine industry, earning a reputation for its extraordinary red wines, particularly its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. The distinctively elegant and well-structured wines produced at Plateau Vineyards were a testament to their commitment to quality and excellence. With each passing vintage, their wines continued to captivate the palates of wine connoisseurs around the world.

Throughout the years, Plateau Vineyards has remained steadfast in its pursuit of perfection. Continuity and consistency have been key values for the winery, as it has been passed down through several generations. Joseph Williams's son, Robert Williams, took over the reins in the early 2000s and ensured that the principles of his father continued to guide the winemaking process.

Under Robert's stewardship, Plateau Vineyards flourished, expanding its vineyard holdings and acquiring new plots of land that showcased the remarkable diversity of California's wine regions. This expansion allowed for the exploration of new grape varietals, adding further depth to their already impressive portfolio.

Today, Plateau Vineyards stands as a testament to the dreams and dedication of the Williams family. The winery remains committed to producing limited-production, artisanal wines that reflect the essence of California's terroir. Their unwavering dedication to quality and their deep respect for nature continue to shape every aspect of their winemaking philosophy.

Visitors to Plateau Vineyards are treated to a truly immersive experience, as they have carefully designed their tasting rooms to provide a glimpse into their storied past and a glimpse into the future. Surrounded by picturesque vineyards and breathtaking views, guests can sample a range of exceptional wines while gaining firsthand insight into the art and science behind winemaking.

Plateau Vineyards is more than just a winery; it is a testament to the spirit of exploration, craftsmanship, and the enduring pursuit of excellence. With each passing year, they continue to push the boundaries of winemaking, creating compelling wines that delight the senses and embody the true essence of California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
