History
Pessagno Winery: A Journey through Time and Terroir
Nestled in the heart of Monterey County, California, Pessagno Winery stands as a testament to the rich history and vibrant winemaking traditions of the region. Founded in 2002 by winemaker Stephen Pessagno, the winery quickly gained recognition for its exceptional cool-climate varietals, showcasing the unique characteristics of the Monterey appellation. Drawing inspiration from his family's agricultural background, Stephen embarked on a journey that would shape Pessagno Winery into the respected producer it is today.
The Pessagno family's historical ties to the wine industry trace back to early 20th-century California. Italian immigrant Jaquin Pessagno, Stephen's grandfather, brought with him a deep passion and knowledge for viticulture. Settling in the fertile Salinas Valley, he established a small vineyard and produced wines primarily for personal consumption. This generational connection to the land and grapes would later inspire Stephen to carry on his family's legacy in winemaking.
Stephen Pessagno's own winemaking journey began in the 1980s while pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Plant Science at California State University, Fresno. Eager to gain hands-on experience, he worked at various wineries throughout California, honing his skills and developing a deep appreciation for the art and science of winemaking.
After several years of working as a winemaker for notable wineries in California's Central Coast region, Stephen set his sights on establishing his own winery. In 2002, with the help of his wife, Linda, Pessagno Winery became a reality. They acquired a picturesque piece of land in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, known for its cool maritime climate and ideal conditions for grape growing.
Pessagno Winery quickly distinguished itself by focusing on cool-climate varietals, including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grape varieties thrive in the coastal influence of Monterey Bay, where fog, cool breezes, and extended growing seasons result in grapes with balanced acidity, complexity, and elegance.
Stephen's winemaking philosophy revolves around minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard's terroir to speak through the wines. With meticulous vineyard management practices, Stephen ensures that the fruit reaches optimal ripeness, expressing the unique characteristics of each vineyard block.
Today, Pessagno Winery boasts an impressive portfolio of wines sourced from their estate vineyards within the Santa Lucia Highlands, as well as other renowned vineyards in Monterey County. In addition to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the winery produces compelling Rhône and Bordeaux varietals, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and more.
Pessagno Winery's commitment to quality has gained recognition from both critics and wine enthusiasts alike. Their wines have consistently received accolades for their refined elegance, complexity, and the expression of Monterey's distinct terroir.
Beyond its winemaking endeavors, Pessagno Winery is also committed to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. From vineyard management techniques that prioritize biodiversity to utilizing renewable energy sources, the winery strives to be a responsible steward of the land and an advocate for sustainable wine production.
Visiting Pessagno Winery is an immersive experience that allows guests to explore the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and enjoy the fruits of Stephen Pessagno's labor. The charming tasting room offers an intimate setting to savor their award-winning wines while overlooking the picturesque vineyards.
Pessagno Winery stands as a testament to the passionate individuals who have shaped California's wine industry over the years. Through a deep respect for the land, a commitment to crafting exceptional wines, and a tireless pursuit of excellence, Stephen Pessagno and his team continue to showcase Monterey County's remarkable winegrowing potential. Each bottle of Pessagno wine tells a story, inviting wine lovers to share in the legacy of this remarkable winery.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
