Oakville Ranch
History
Oakville Ranch is an iconic winery nestled in the heart of Napa Valley's esteemed Oakville region in California. With a history that spans over a century, this winery has become synonymous with crafting exceptional wines that showcase the region's unique terroir.
The story of Oakville Ranch begins in the late 1800s when George Yount, a pioneer settler in Napa Valley, first recognized the potential of the area's fertile soil and ideal climate for grape cultivation. Yount was captivated by the scenic beauty of the region and saw a remarkable opportunity to cultivate vineyards. He planted the first grapevines on what is now known as Oakville Ranch, starting what would become a legacy of winemaking.
However, it wasn't until the mid-20th century that the winery as we know it today truly took shape. In 1969, Robert and Mary Miner acquired the property, initially intending to use it as a hillside retreat. However, the couple soon recognized the potential for grape growing on the land, and by 1980, they had replanted the vineyards, focusing on varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay.
The Miners' dedication to quality winemaking and their passion for the land led them to establish the Oakville Ranch winery officially in 1989. They enlisted the expertise of renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett, best known for her work with cult winery Screaming Eagle. Barrett's meticulous approach to winemaking and her commitment to crafting wines that beautifully express the terroir became instrumental in Oakville Ranch's success.
Over the next few decades, Oakville Ranch solidified its reputation for producing exceptional wines. The winery's vineyards extend across 350 acres of diverse terroir, comprising steep hillsides, rocky slopes, and volcanic soils. This unique blend of terroir creates ideal growing conditions, resulting in grapes with distinct character and complexity.
Oakville Ranch has always been committed to sustainability, implementing environmentally friendly practices in their vineyards and winemaking process. They prioritize organic farming techniques, limiting the use of pesticides and herbicides, and utilizing cover crops to maintain soil fertility and biodiversity. Additionally, the winery employs solar power and practices water conservation to minimize their ecological impact.
Today, Oakville Ranch continues to thrive under the stewardship of the Shoup family, who acquired the winery in 2010. Their ongoing dedication to preserving the legacy of Oakville Ranch while embracing innovation has further elevated the winery's reputation and commitment to excellence.
Visitors to Oakville Ranch can experience the breathtaking beauty of the estate while enjoying tastings of their exceptional wines. The winery offers educational tours, allowing guests to explore the vineyards and learn about their sustainable viticulture practices. The tasting room provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, where guests can savor the nuanced flavors and aromas that define Oakville Ranch wines.
Oakville Ranch has undoubtedly carved its mark in the California winemaking landscape, continually evolving and adapting while remaining committed to producing wines of unparalleled quality. With a rich history that pays homage to the pioneers who recognized the incredible potential of the land, Oakville Ranch stands as a testament to the artistry and passion that define Napa Valley's winemaking tradition.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
