Michael David Winery History

The Michael David Winery, located in the heart of California's Lodi wine region, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several generations. It is a captivating tale of family, resilience, and dedication to producing exceptional wines.

The winery's story begins with two brothers, Michael and David Phillips, who come from a long line of grape growers and farmers. Their great-grandfather, Phillip Muscat Phillips, emigrated from the Azores Islands in Portugal to the United States in the late 1800s, bringing with him a love and knowledge of viticulture. Settling in Lodi, California, Phillip began growing grapes and cultivating vineyards, laying the foundation for what would become a winemaking dynasty.

Jumping forward in time, it was in the late 1980s when Michael and David Phillips decided to channel their family's grape-growing heritage into winemaking. In 1984, Michael and David founded their own winery, aptly named Phillips Vineyards, which primarily focused on producing bulk wines.

In 1997, a significant turning point occurred for the family as they shifted their winemaking philosophy towards crafting premium, high-quality wines. It was during this transformation that the brothers renamed the winery Michael David Winery, combining their first names, to reflect their personal commitment to the brand.

A pivotal release for the winery came in 1997 when Michael David Winery introduced its flagship wine, Seven Deadly Zins. This Zinfandel quickly gained popularity for its bold, fruit-forward character and excellent value, becoming an iconic representation of Lodi's winemaking prowess. Seven Deadly Zins played a crucial role in elevating the reputation of Lodi as a world-class wine region and establishing Michael David Winery as a leading producer.

As Michael David Winery continued to expand its portfolio, it gained recognition for its innovative winemaking techniques and dedication to crafting distinctive wines. The winery's commitment to sustainable farming practices and its pioneering use of cutting-edge technology, such as solar energy systems and water conservation methods, further solidified its reputation not only as a quality producer but also as a steward of the environment.

Over the years, Michael David Winery has received numerous accolades and awards for its exceptional wines. Standout offerings include Petite Petit, a bold red blend, Earthquake Zinfandel, characterized by its rich and robust flavors, and Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon, renowned for its opulent and expressive nature.

Beyond its commitment to winemaking excellence, Michael David Winery is deeply rooted in its local community. The Phillips family actively participates in philanthropic endeavors, supporting various charities and organizations to give back to the region that has shaped their winemaking journey.

Through their unwavering dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of winemaking excellence, Michael and David Phillips have established Michael David Winery as an icon in the California wine industry. Their profound impact on the Lodi wine region, coupled with their unparalleled wines, has solidified their place in the hearts and glasses of wine lovers worldwide.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
