Mettler Family Vineyards History

Mettler Family Vineyards, located in California's esteemed Lodi appellation, has a rich and fascinating history that spans multiple generations. The story of this renowned winery begins with its founder, George Mettler, who laid the foundation for what would become a celebrated winemaking legacy.

George Mettler was a German immigrant who settled in the Lodi region in the late 1800s. Recognizing the region's incredible potential for winemaking, he purchased a plot of land and planted his first vineyard. With a strong commitment to quality and a passion for winemaking, George and his family tirelessly worked the land, nurturing their vineyards and producing exceptional wines.

The Mettler family's dedication paid off, and by the early 20th century, their wines gained recognition for their exceptional quality. However, like many other wineries, Mettler Family Vineyards faced challenges during the era of Prohibition in the United States. Despite the ban on alcohol, the family managed to survive by selling their grapes to other wineries and producing sacramental wine, which was permitted during that time.

After the repeal of Prohibition in the 1930s, George Mettler's sons, Carl and Ellis, took over the operations of the vineyards. They continued the family's tradition of producing outstanding wines, slowly expanding their production and developing a loyal base of customers. Under their stewardship, Mettler Family Vineyards thrived, earning a solid reputation for crafting wines that showcased the unique terroir of the Lodi appellation.

In the 1980s, the fourth generation of the Mettler family, siblings Larry and Kelli Mettler, joined the winery. This marked a new chapter in the history of Mettler Family Vineyards, as they brought fresh ideas and a renewed focus on sustainable farming practices. Larry, who holds a degree in viticulture and enology, utilized his expertise to further elevate the quality of the vineyard's offerings.

Today, Mettler Family Vineyards is known for its commitment to producing exceptional single-vineyard wines, primarily from their acclaimed "Epicenter" vineyard, renowned for its old, gnarled Zinfandel vines. With a deep respect for the land, the family constantly strives to minimize their environmental impact, employing sustainable farming techniques to ensure the longevity of their vineyards for future generations.

The winery's portfolio offers a diverse range of varietals including Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and more, each expressing the unique character and luscious flavors that the Lodi appellation is renowned for.

Mettler Family Vineyards continues to receive critical acclaim and numerous accolades for their exceptional wines. Their dedication to quality, sustainability, and their unwavering commitment to crafting wines that reflect their family traditions and the essence of the Lodi region has firmly established them as one of California's beloved wineries.

In conclusion, Mettler Family Vineyards weaves together the rich history of the Mettler family, their unwavering dedication, and their continuous efforts to produce outstanding wines that have made them a fixture in the California winemaking landscape.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
