Merryvale Vineyards History

Merryvale Vineyards is an iconic winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. With a rich history dating back over 100 years, the winery has become synonymous with quality craftsmanship, innovation, and the art of winemaking.

The story of Merryvale Vineyards began in the late 19th century when an ambitious German immigrant named Hubert Opici arrived in California. Opici had a deep appreciation for wine and dreamed of creating his own winery. In 1933, he purchased a plot of land in the picturesque St. Helena appellation of Napa Valley and named it Sunny St. Helena Vineyards. It was here that the foundation for what would later become Merryvale Vineyards was laid.

In 1959, the Schlatter family, who were also captivated by the beauty and potential of Napa Valley, acquired Sunny St. Helena Vineyards. Renaming the property Merryvale, they set out to build a winery that would honor the traditions of winemaking while also embracing innovation. Under the leadership of Jack Schlatter, Merryvale Vineyards began to flourish.

In the early 1970s, Merryvale Vineyards became one of the first wineries in Napa Valley to focus on producing premium Bordeaux-style wines. This forward-thinking approach helped put Napa Valley on the map as a world-class wine region. Merryvale's commitment to quality winemaking and sustainable practices also earned them recognition as a Napa Green Certified Winery, showcasing their dedication to the environment.

Throughout the decades, Merryvale Vineyards continued to impress wine enthusiasts with their exceptional wines. One of their most notable achievements came in 1991 when Merryvale became the first winery in Napa Valley to produce a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the esteemed Beckstoffer Vineyard. This groundbreaking release further solidified Merryvale as a trailblazer in the industry.

In 1996, Merryvale Vineyards underwent a significant expansion and renovation, including the construction of a state-of-the-art winery facility. This allowed them to increase production capabilities while maintaining their meticulous attention to detail. The winery's modern design seamlessly blended with the surrounding vineyards, creating a welcoming and immersive experience for visitors.

Today, Merryvale Vineyards continues to be a leader in the Napa Valley wine scene. Under the guidance of President and Winemaker Simon Faury, Merryvale produces a diverse selection of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Bordeaux-style blends. The winery's commitment to excellence is evident in every bottle, with their wines consistently receiving praise and accolades from wine critics and enthusiasts alike.

Beyond their award-winning wines, Merryvale Vineyards has also become a destination for wine enthusiasts and visitors seeking an authentic Napa Valley experience. The winery offers a range of tastings and tours, allowing guests to explore the vineyards, cellar, and barrel aging caves. The Merryvale Hospitality Center, with its stunning terrace overlooking the vineyards, provides the perfect setting for private events and gatherings.

In conclusion, Merryvale Vineyards has a remarkable history that spans generations. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
