Menghini Winery
History
Menghini Winery, nestled in the picturesque Cuyamaca Mountains of San Diego County, is a family-owned and operated winery with a rich history that spans over four decades. Established in 1985 by the Menghini family, this winery has become an iconic landmark in the region, renowned for its exceptional wines and stunning vineyards.
The story of Menghini Winery begins with the patriarch of the family, Willie Menghini. An Italian immigrant who settled in San Diego County in the 1940s, Willie possessed a deep love and appreciation for wines. His passion for winemaking led him to purchase a 23-acre piece of land in the charming community of Julian, California, where he fulfilled his dream of creating his own winery.
Initially, the winery's focus was primarily on growing and producing high-quality grapes, which quickly gained recognition within the local wine community. However, it wasn't until the 1980s that the Menghini family decided to take their wine production to the next level and officially establish Menghini Winery.
Under the guidance and expertise of Willie's son, Len Menghini, the winery began crafting its own signature wines. Len, with his extensive knowledge of winemaking techniques and a commitment to excellence, introduced innovative practices and modernized the winemaking process, resulting in wines of exceptional quality and character.
The winery's vineyards are situated at an elevation ranging from 4200 to 4800 feet, providing the ideal microclimate for grape growing. The cool mountain air, coupled with the well-drained soils, creates a unique terroir that imparts distinct flavors and aromas to the grapes. Menghini Winery predominantly cultivates classic Bordeaux and Rhône grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache, among others.
Over the years, Menghini Winery has gained widespread acclaim for its award-winning wines, earning numerous accolades and medals at prestigious wine competitions. Their dedication to quality, sustainable practices, and traditional winemaking methods has solidified their position as one of the premier wineries in the region.
Beyond its exceptional wines, Menghini Winery is also renowned for its stunning vineyards and picturesque surroundings. Visitors to the winery can enjoy a scenic drive through the rolling hills, explore the vineyards, and experience a tranquil ambiance that perfectly complements the wine tasting experience.
The Menghini family's commitment to preserving the winery's rich history and sharing their love for winemaking has made Menghini Winery a popular destination for wine enthusiasts and tourists alike. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
