Maurice Carrie Winery History

The Maurice Carrie Winery is an iconic establishment located in Temecula Valley, Southern California. Founded in 1986, it is deeply rooted in the history of Temecula's winemaking tradition. The winery is named after two influential pioneers of the region, Maurice Van Roekel and Carrie Cottini.

Maurice Van Roekel, a Dutch immigrant, fell in love with the land and the potential it held for grape cultivation in the late 1960s. Recognizing the similarities in climate and soil composition to the renowned wine regions of Europe, Maurice believed that Temecula Valley had the potential to become a world-class wine-producing region.

Meanwhile, Carrie Cottini, who had a passion for viticulture and winemaking, shared Maurice's vision. Together, they embarked on a journey to establish a winery that would showcase the immense potential of Temecula Valley.

In the early years, Maurice and Carrie faced numerous challenges. The region was still in its infancy regarding viticulture, and they had to overcome the skepticism of those who believed it impossible to produce high-quality wine in such a relatively unexplored territory.

Through sheer dedication and innovative techniques, Maurice and Carrie dedicated themselves to transforming their dream into a reality. They experimented with various grape varieties, studied the terroir, and always pushed the envelope to enhance the quality of their wines.

Their hard work paid off when, in 1986, the Maurice Carrie Winery was officially established. Set amidst breathtaking vineyard landscapes, the winery quickly gained recognition for its exceptional wines. The winery's flagship varieties included Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

Maurice Carrie Winery's success was not limited to its delicious wines; it also became a hub for wine enthusiasts, locals, and tourists alike. The winery offered educational tours and tastings, ensuring that visitors had the opportunity to learn about winemaking and savor the fruits of Maurice and Carrie's labor.

Sadly, Maurice passed away in 2002, leaving behind a profound legacy in Temecula Valley. His dedication, passion, and unwavering belief in the potential of the region continue to inspire and shape the winery's philosophy today. Carrie, carrying the torch after Maurice's passing, has continued to build upon their shared dreams.

Under Carrie's leadership, the winery has expanded its vineyards, acquiring additional parcels of land and planting new grape varieties. This extension facilitated an increased production capacity while maintaining the same meticulous attention to detail that has defined the winery from its inception.

The Maurice Carrie Winery has garnered numerous accolades and awards over the years, acknowledging its ongoing commitment to producing exceptional wines. The winery has also become a highly sought-after venue for weddings, private events, and corporate gatherings, becoming an integral part of the Temecula community.

The dedication of the Maurice Carrie Winery to its craft, rooted in the pioneering spirit of its founders, has solidified its standing as one of the most esteemed wineries in Temecula Valley. Through their unwavering commitment to quality, Maurice and Carrie have created a lasting legacy that continues to shape the winery's future, firmly establishing it as an essential destination for wine lovers and enthusiasts visiting California's stunning Temecula region.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
