History
Founded in 1933, Louis M. Martini Winery is an iconic and renowned winery nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, California. Named after its founder, Louis M. Martini, this winery holds a rich history spanning over several generations.
Louis M. Martini was born in Italy in 1887 and immigrated to the United States in 1899. He settled in the Sonoma Valley, where he gained valuable winemaking knowledge working at local wineries. Combining his passion for winemaking with his entrepreneurial spirit, Martini decided to establish his own winery in California.
In 1933, during the dark years of Prohibition, Louis M. Martini seized the opportunity to purchase the winemaking operations of the historic Sunny St. Helena Winery in St. Helena. This acquisition allowed him a legal route to produce sacramental wine during Prohibition, which ensured the winery's survival. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Martini transitioned the winery into a full-scale producer of fine wines for public sale.
Throughout the decades, Louis M. Martini Winery became synonymous with exceptional winemaking practices, meticulously crafted wines, and an unwavering commitment to quality. An innovator in the field, Martini was one of the first winemakers to experiment with different grape varietals and vineyard techniques, pushing the boundaries of winemaking in California.
In the 1940s, Louis M. Martini pioneered the technique of cold fermentation, leading to brighter and fruitier wines. This groundbreaking technique helped define the Sonoma County style, showcasing the region's unique terroir. Martini's relentless pursuit of excellence and his innovative winemaking techniques set a benchmark for the entire industry.
Following Louis M. Martini's passing in 1977, his son, Louis P. Martini, took over the winery. Under Louis P.'s leadership, the winery continued to flourish and gain recognition for its exceptional wines. In 2002, E. & J. Gallo Winery acquired Louis M. Martini Winery, recognizing the historic legacy and commitment to quality that it represented.
Today, Louis M. Martini Winery continues to produce award-winning wines and remains committed to honoring the winery's rich heritage. The winery's portfolio includes a wide range of varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec, and more. They source their grapes from renowned vineyards across Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and other esteemed regions in California.
With a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and a dedicated team of winemakers, Louis M. Martini Winery stays true to its founder's vision. They combine traditional winemaking techniques with modern advancements to create wines that reflect the unique terroir of California.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
