Longboard Vineyards is a reputable winery located in Healdsburg, California. Founded in 1998 by Oded Shakked, Longboard Vineyards has emerged as a celebrated establishment within the wine industry, known for its commitment to creating high-quality wines that perfectly embody the essence of California's wine country.
The story behind Longboard Vineyards begins with Oded Shakked, a passionate surfer turned winemaker. Shakked was born and raised in Israel, where he developed a deep connection with nature and a love for the ocean. After serving in the Israeli Navy, Shakked embarked on a journey to explore the world and find his calling.
In the early 1980s, Shakked set his sights on California, attracted by its vibrant surf culture and the possibility of making his dreams of becoming a winemaker a reality. He landed in Santa Cruz, immersing himself in the local surfing community and beginning his lifelong journey with winemaking.
Shakked's path to winemaking began with humble beginnings. He initially took on various jobs in the wine industry, including working as a vineyard laborer and cellar hand, to gain practical experience and knowledge about the craft. This hands-on education fueled his desire to create his own wines, leading him to establish Longboard Vineyards.
The name "Longboard" itself is a nod to Shakked's passion for surfing. Longboard surfing is characterized by riding traditional surfboards, known as longboards, which require grace, balance, and an intimate connection with the ocean. Shakked sought to embody these same principles in his winemaking approach, focusing on crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of each vineyard and evoke a sense of place.
Longboard Vineyards primarily produces cool-climate wines, sourcing their grapes from carefully selected vineyards across California's most renowned wine regions, such as the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Anderson Valley. Shakked believes that cool-climate vineyards provide an optimal environment for producing wines with elegance, complexity, and vibrant acidity.
The winery is dedicated to sustainable viticulture practices, embracing organic and biodynamic principles whenever possible. By working closely with growers who share their commitment to sustainability, Longboard Vineyards ensures the highest quality grapes make their way into their wines.
Longboard Vineyards offers an impressive portfolio of wines, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine undergoes meticulous crafting, often employing traditional winemaking techniques like hand-sorting grapes, small-batch fermentation, and aging in French oak barrels. This attention to detail allows the wines to express their varietal characteristics while showcasing the distinct qualities imparted by the vineyards from which they originate.
Over the years, Longboard Vineyards has gained recognition and numerous accolades for its outstanding wines. Their dedication to producing exceptional cool-climate wines has received acclaim from respected wine critics and enthusiasts alike. The winery's tasting room, located in the heart of Healdsburg, provides visitors with a welcoming and educational experience, sharing the winery's story and offering the opportunity to taste their extraordinary wines.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
