Kalyra Winery History

Kalyra Winery, located in Santa Ynez Valley, California, is a renowned winery with a rich history deeply rooted in the winemaking heritage of the region. Kalyra Winery was founded in 1983 by Australian winemaker Mike Brown, who had a vision of bringing a taste of Australia's winemaking traditions to the Californian wine scene.

Mike Brown, originally from Adelaide, Australia, had a lifelong passion for wine and winemaking. In the early 1980s, he embarked on a journey to California in search of new opportunities in the wine industry. Inspired by the beauty of Santa Barbara County and its potential for vine cultivation, Brown decided to establish his own winery.

The name "Kalyra" comes from an Australian Aboriginal word meaning "a wild and pleasant place." This name perfectly exemplifies the winery's philosophy of creating a welcoming and relaxed environment where visitors can experience the joys of wine tasting and appreciate the surrounding natural beauty.

Kalyra Winery immediately gained popularity for its unique approach to winemaking. Brown blended Australian winemaking techniques with Californian grapes to produce distinctive, high-quality wines. Their portfolio initially included classic varietals such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel. Over the years, the winery expanded its offerings to include lesser-known varietals, experimental blends, and fortified wines.

One of Kalyra Winery's most significant milestones came in 2004 when it gained widespread recognition after being featured in the hit movie "Sideways." The critically acclaimed film showcased the beauty of Santa Barbara wine country and inadvertently put Kalyra Winery in the spotlight. This exposure led to an increase in visitors eager to explore the locations featured in the film, including Kalyra Winery.

With the rise in popularity, Kalyra Winery continued to evolve and innovate. The winery began hosting events and offering wine education classes, ensuring that visitors had a comprehensive experience that deepened their appreciation for wine. Brown and his team embraced a philosophy of making wine approachable for everyone, breaking away from the traditional notions of exclusivity sometimes associated with wineries.

Sadly, in 2010, Mike Brown passed away, leaving behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and a diverse range of exceptional wines. His legacy continues to thrive under the guidance of winemaker Joe Eitel, who took over the reins at Kalyra Winery.

Today, Kalyra Winery remains a beloved fixture in Santa Barbara County, offering visitors a warm and welcoming atmosphere, breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, and a diverse range of exquisite wines. Whether it's hosting live music events, wine tastings, or charity events, Kalyra Winery continues to foster a sense of community and shared enjoyment of wine.

In conclusion, Kalyra Winery has established itself as a pioneer in the Santa Barbara County wine community, fusing Australian winemaking traditions with California's terroir. Through its rich history, commitment to exceptional wine production, and dedication to providing a memorable experience for visitors, Kalyra Winery has firmly cemented its place as a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a taste of both Australia and California in every sip.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
