J Vineyards & Winery History

J Vineyards & Winery, located in the heart of California's Sonoma County, has a rich and fascinating history that begins with the visionary Judy Jordan. Established in 1986, J Vineyards & Winery has become renowned for its premium sparkling wines and exceptional still wines, consistently garnering accolades from critics and wine enthusiasts.

The story of J Vineyards & Winery begins with Judy Jordan, the daring and ambitious daughter of Tom Jordan, founder of Jordan Vineyard & Winery. After completing her studies in microbiology at Stanford University, Judy was inspired by her love for science and wine to delve into the world of winemaking. She recognized the burgeoning potential of Russian River Valley and decided to purchase 20-acres of land, embarking on her journey to establish a winery that would reflect her passion and dedication to crafting exceptional wines.

Judy's vision was to create a winery that would specialize in sparkling wines, a category that was relatively untapped in California at the time. She was determined to challenge the traditional notion that sparkling wines were exclusively reserved for special occasions, aiming to showcase their versatility and undeniable charm. To bring her vision to life, she enlisted the expertise of winemaker Terry Adams, who had a wealth of experience in crafting sparkling wines in California.

In 1987, J Vineyards & Winery released its first vintage, impressing wine enthusiasts and experts alike. Using grapes sourced exclusively from their estate vineyards and trusted local growers, J Vineyards & Winery produced sparkling wines of unparalleled quality. The winery's commitment to excellence included utilizing traditional Champagne methods, such as hand-picking grapes and gentle whole-cluster pressing, to ensure the finest expression of the fruit.

As J Vineyards & Winery gained recognition for its exceptional sparkling wines, it gradually expanded its portfolio to include still wines. Under Terry Adams' meticulous winemaking approach, the winery began producing varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, paying homage to the unique terroir of Russian River Valley. J Vineyards & Winery's still wines showcased the same depth, complexity, and elegance that had made their sparkling wines so celebrated.

Throughout the years, J Vineyards & Winery has consistently pushed the boundaries of winemaking in California. Judy's dedication to innovation is exemplified by J's Pinot Gris, a wine that introduced an extended skin contact technique that added a captivating texture and depth. This groundbreaking winemaking technique showcased J Vineyards & Winery's commitment to highlighting the full potential of the grapes they cultivated.

In 2015, J Vineyards & Winery embarked on a new chapter when it was acquired by the E. & J. Gallo Winery, a renowned family-owned winery that shares a similar commitment to quality and innovation. The acquisition allowed J Vineyards & Winery to further expand its reach while maintaining its exceptional standards.

Today, J Vineyards & Winery continues to be a leading producer of sparkling wines and still wines, renowned for their unmatched craftsmanship and artistry. With a stunning tasting room and a commitment to sustainable practices, the winery offers visitors an immersive experience where they can indulge in the beauty of Russian River Valley and savor the exquisite wines crafted by the talented team.

Through the ambitious vision of Judy Jordan and the dedication of their winemaking team, J Vineyards & Winery has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines that capture the essence of their terroir. With each bottle, J Vineyards & Winery celebrates the art of winemaking, inviting wine enthusiasts around the world to experience the joy and elegance of their remarkable creations.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
