Ironstone Vineyards
History
Ironstone Vineyards is a renowned winery located in Murphys, California. With a rich history dating back to the 1940s, Ironstone has become synonymous with exceptional quality wines and a commitment to sustainability.
The story of Ironstone Vineyards begins with John Kautz, the founder and visionary behind this illustrious winery. In 1948, John's father, G.J. Kautz, started a farming venture in Lodi, California, growing crops such as tomatoes and wheat. However, John had a different vision in mind. Inspired by the beauty and potential of the Sierra Foothills, he wanted to establish a winery that showcased the region's unique terroir.
In 1988, John purchased a former logging camp in Calaveras County, which would later become the home of Ironstone Vineyards. The property boasted abundant natural resources, including the rich soil, granite rock formations, and the iconic 44-pound "rhodonite" ironstone rock that lends the winery its name. These natural features proved instrumental in shaping the winery's character and defining its distinctiveness over the years.
The winery’s first vineyard was planted in 1990, with the inaugural vintage released in 1994. The early years were marked by experimentation with different grape varietals and winemaking techniques. John and his team carefully selected grape varieties that would thrive in this unique microclimate, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Symphony, a lesser-known grape variety.
Ironstone Vineyards quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional wines, winning numerous prestigious awards and accolades. Their commitment to crafting wines of remarkable quality, combined with a dedication to sustainable practices, has elevated them to become one of the leading wineries in California.
Under John's leadership, Ironstone Vineyards expanded its operations beyond winemaking. The winery encompasses a magnificent 55,000-square-foot facility, which includes a state-of-the-art production facility, tasting room, gourmet deli, and culinary center. The facilities are not only designed to showcase the winery's exceptional wines but also to provide visitors with a memorable experience.
Beyond its beautiful facilities, Ironstone Vineyards is known for its philanthropic efforts and commitment to the local community. The winery hosts several charitable events and fundraisers, with the proceeds going towards various causes, including children's health and education, environmental conservation, and community development.

They have implemented water conservation measures, installed solar panels, and implemented sustainable vineyard management techniques, including organic farming practices. These initiatives reflect the winery's commitment to ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for the California wine industry.
Today, Ironstone Vineyards continues to produce exceptional wines that reflect the beauty and diversity of the Sierra Foothill's terroir. With each vintage, they uphold their reputation for excellence, constantly pushing boundaries and crafting wines that delight wine enthusiasts around the world.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
