Imagery Estate Winery
History
Imagery Estate Winery, nestled in the scenic Sonoma Valley in the heart of California's wine country, boasts a rich and unique history dating back to its inception in 1986. Unlike many wineries in the region, Imagery Estate Winery was not started by a family with generations of winemaking experience. Instead, it was born out of the vision and passion of the Benziger family.
The story of Imagery Estate Winery begins with Joe Benziger, a member of the renowned Benziger winemaking family. In the early 1980s, Joe developed a deep fascination for the art of winemaking and a desire to explore the possibility of crafting wines that reflected his personal creative expression. This desire laid the foundation for the creation of Imagery Estate Winery.
Intrigued by the concept of blending grape varieties to create unique and captivating wines, Joe's vision was to take this approach to the next level. He saw wine as a form of art, and each varietal as a "paint color" that could be skillfully blended to create a masterpiece. This concept formed the basis of Imagery Estate Winery's philosophy, which still resonates throughout the winery today.
Imagery Estate Winery acquired its first vineyard in 1986, located in the picturesque Glen Ellen region of Sonoma Valley. The winery's early years were marked by experimentation and innovation. Joe Benziger worked diligently with the winemaking team to develop new and exciting blends, pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking practices.
Over time, Imagery Estate Winery began to specialize in lesser-known grape varieties and unique clones. The winery's commitment to experimentation and exploration allowed them to introduce varietals such as Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Lagrein, and Viognier. Coupled with their dedication to showcasing the distinct flavor profiles of these wines, Imagery Estate Winery quickly gained a reputation for producing incredibly expressive and unconventional wines.
In addition to blending grape varieties, Imagery Estate Winery also caught the attention of art enthusiasts. Joe Benziger recognized the connection between wine and art, and he decided that each bottling should feature artwork that brought the essence of the wine to life visually. This led to the introduction of the "Artist Series" in 1987, where original artwork was commissioned for each bottle, creating a unique and collectible aspect of Imagery wine.
The winery's commitment to artistic expression expanded beyond the labels. Imagery Estate Winery established partnerships with various artists, hosting an annual "Imagery Estate Artists in Residence" program where artists were invited to create works inspired by the vineyards and the art of winemaking itself. The winery's wine tasting room also became a showcase for artwork, allowing visitors to enjoy both the visual and sensory experiences of wine.
In 2001, Imagery Estate Winery found an ideal opportunity for growth in the esteemed Benziger Family Winery, which shared similar philosophies and values. Imagery Estate became a sister winery to Benziger, preserving its unique identity while gaining access to additional resources and expertise. This partnership propelled the winery to new heights while ensuring its continued commitment to producing exceptional, art-inspired wines.
Today, Imagery Estate Winery remains a true reflection of Joe Benziger's original vision – a place where the art of winemaking and artistic expression merge harmoniously. The winery's focus on unique grape varieties, exploration of blending techniques, and celebration of fine art have made it a beloved destination for wine enthusiasts and art aficionados alike.
As visitors step onto the grounds of Imagery Estate Winery, they are greeted by stunning vineyards, a beautiful tasting room filled with original artwork, and a sense of creativity that permeates the air. It is a place where the boundaries of winemaking are continually pushed, and where wine is celebrated as a medium for artistic expression. With its rich history and commitment to innovation, Imagery Estate Winery stands as a testament to the power of creativity and passion in the world of wine.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
