Honig Vineyard & Winery History

Honig Vineyard & Winery stands as a cornerstone of California's wine heritage, boasting an exceptional legacy that spans several generations. The captivating story of Honig Vineyard & Winery begins in the late 1960s when Louis Honig, a young entrepreneur from New York, embarked on a journey to make his mark in the wine industry.

In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre vineyard in Rutherford, a small yet renowned appellation nestled in the heart of the Napa Valley. Having fallen in love with the region, Louis recognized the immense potential of this land for growing premium quality grapes. This marked the dawn of Honig Vineyard & Winery, and the family's commitment to crafting exceptional wines from the finest vineyards in the region became the driving force behind their success.

Under Louis Honig's insightful leadership, the winery faced initial challenges, including a period of grapevine devastation caused by phylloxera, an insect pest that attacked vineyards across Napa Valley in the 1980s. However, Louis and his family demonstrated remarkable resilience, replanting their vineyards with superior rootstock and selecting grape varietals suited to the unique terroir of the region.

With the passing of Louis Honig in 1994, his children, Michael, Stephanie, and Christine, assumed the reins of the winery, each contributing their individual talents and expertise. Together, they united the family's unwavering dedication to sustainable farming practices and the preservation of the Napa Valley's natural beauty.

In the early 2000s, Honig Vineyard & Winery embraced the emerging trend of organic viticulture. The family made the conscious decision to convert their vineyards to 100% organic farming, making them one of the first wineries in the Napa Valley to receive organic certification. This bold move not only reflected their commitment to environmental stewardship but also showcased their dedication to producing wines that truly showcased the unique characteristics of their terroir.

Today, Honig Vineyard & Winery remains true to its founding philosophy of crafting world-class wines that reflect the distinct flavors of Napa Valley. The winery focuses on producing small-lot, estate-grown wines that capture the essence of the region's diverse vineyards. With an unyielding dedication to quality and sustainability, Honig continues to be recognized as a benchmark for excellence within the California wine industry.

Beyond winemaking, the Honig family also strives to make a positive impact on their community. They actively contribute to various local organizations, including the Land Trust of Napa County and the Napa Valley Agriculture Preserve, supporting initiatives that aim to protect and conserve the region's open spaces.

The remarkable journey of Honig Vineyard & Winery stands as a testament to the enduring passion and commitment of the Honig family. From their humble beginnings as pioneers in the Napa Valley wine industry to their ongoing commitment to sustainability and community involvement, Honig Vineyard & Winery has left an indelible mark on California winemaking history.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
