What Makes Handley Cellars
Different From Other Nearby Wineries?
Handley Cellars, located in Anderson Valley, California, stands out among other wineries in the region for several compelling reasons.
First and foremost, Handley Cellars is renowned for its commitment to sustainable and organic practices. With a belief in responsible farming and winemaking, Handley Cellars has been certified as organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) since 2003. This dedication to organic practices ensures that their wines are not only delicious but also produced in an environmentally conscious manner.
Additionally, Handley Cellars excels in cultivating cool-climate varietals, particularly Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer. This focus on cool-climate grapes sets them apart from many wineries in the area that primarily focus on warmer climate varietals. The cool, foggy climate of Anderson Valley provides the ideal conditions for these delicate and nuanced grape varieties, resulting in wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.
Furthermore, Handley Cellars is known for its small production and hands-on approach to winemaking. The winery produces limited quantities of each wine, allowing for greater attention to detail and quality control throughout the winemaking process. This emphasis on craftsmanship ensures that each bottle of Handley wine is a true reflection of the vineyard and the winemaker's vision.
Handley Cellars also offers a diverse selection of wines, catering to a wide range of palates. While Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer are their flagship varietals, they also produce Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and even sparkling wine. This variety of offerings allows wine enthusiasts to explore different styles and flavors, all while enjoying the consistent quality that Handley Cellars is known for.
Another distinctive aspect of Handley Cellars is their beautiful tasting room and vineyard. Surrounded by picturesque landscapes, visiting the winery provides a unique opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Anderson Valley. The tasting room staff is knowledgeable and passionate, creating a welcoming atmosphere where visitors can learn about the winemaking process and engage in insightful conversations about the wines.
In summary, Handley Cellars sets itself apart from other wineries in Anderson Valley through its dedication to sustainable and organic practices, its focus on cool-climate varietals, its small production, its diverse selection of wines, and its stunning tasting room and vineyard. These characteristics combine to create an exceptional wine tasting experience that highlights the unique qualities of this remarkable winery.

The story of Handley Cellars begins with its founder, Milla Handley, a passionate and pioneering figure in the California winemaking industry. Milla's journey into the world of wine started in the early 1970s when she became captivated by the burgeoning wine scene in the Anderson Valley. Inspired by the region's ideal climate and diverse terroir, Milla dreamt of crafting wines that showcased the distinct character of the area.
In 1982, Milla Handley made her vision a reality when she established Handley Cellars as a small, boutique winery. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
