Georis Winery History

Georis Winery is a historic and renowned winery located in the heart of the Carmel Valley wine region in California. It was founded by Emile Georis, a Belgian immigrant with a deep passion for winemaking. The Georis family has been growing grapes and producing exceptional wines since the late 1980s, establishing themselves as one of the premier winemakers in the region.

The story of Georis Winery began when Emile Georis, along with his wife and children, moved to California in search of a new adventure. Emile had a background in horticulture and winemaking, and after discovering the beautiful Carmel Valley, he felt inspired to start his own winery. The family purchased a historic dairy farm and converted it into a vineyard, laying the foundation for what would become Georis Winery.

The winery's location in the Carmel Valley is no accident. Emile Georis recognized the unique microclimate of the region, which boasts cool coastal influences, warm sunny days, and rugged mountain terrain. These distinctive conditions, combined with the family's dedication to sustainable farming practices, have allowed Georis Winery to produce exceptional wines that reflect the terroir of the Carmel Valley.

From the very beginning, Georis Winery focused on crafting small-batch, handcrafted wines that showcase the natural beauty and flavors of the grapes. Emile Georis believed in the traditional winemaking values of Europe, and he brought this expertise and attention to detail to his new venture. In particular, he drew inspiration from the great wines of Bordeaux, seeking to create wines that would rival their quality.

Over the years, Georis Winery has built a strong reputation for its high-quality, estate-grown wines. The winery primarily produces Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, as well as Rhône varietals like Grenache and Syrah. These grapes, carefully tended to in the vineyards and handpicked at the peak of ripeness, result in wines of exceptional character and complexity.

Georis Winery also prides itself on its sustainable farming practices. The family believes in nurturing the land and preserving its natural resources for generations to come. They employ organic and biodynamic farming methods, minimizing the use of synthetic chemicals and promoting biodiversity in the vineyards. This commitment to sustainability not only enhances the quality of their wines but also reflects their dedication to environmental stewardship.

The legacy of Georis Winery extends beyond winemaking. The winery features a charming tasting room housed in a historic stone building, which once served as a trading post for early settlers in the region. The tasting room offers visitors a warm and inviting atmosphere to sample Georis' exceptional wines while soaking in the picturesque surroundings.

Today, Georis Winery continues to be family-owned and operated. The Georis family takes pride in their heritage and maintains their commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and elegance. The winery's wines have garnered numerous accolades and awards, solidifying their position as one of the esteemed wineries in the Carmel Valley and the broader California wine community.

In conclusion, Georis Winery is a testament to the vision and passion of the Georis family. From humble beginnings, they have created a legacy of winemaking that embraces tradition, sustainability, and the unique terroir of the Carmel Valley. With each bottle, Georis Winery tells a story of the California wine industry, a story of perseverance, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
