Frangipani Estate Winery History

Frangipani Estate Winery, nestled in the heart of California's renowned Napa Valley, has a rich and captivating history that dates back several decades. The winery's story begins in the early 1970s when Robert and Nancy Riva, a young couple with a deep passion for viticulture, purchased a vast plot of land in Napa Valley.

The Rivas initially intended to cultivate the property solely for agricultural purposes. However, inspired by the region's flourishing wine industry, they soon decided to convert a portion of their land into a small vineyard. With a vision of creating exceptional wines that reflect the terroir of Napa Valley, they embarked on a journey that would shape the future of Frangipani Estate Winery.

In 1976, the Rivas planted their first grapevines, carefully selecting varietals that complemented the valley's ideal microclimate, soils, and topography. They named their newly established vineyard and winery after the frangipani flower—a tropical blossom renowned for its exquisite fragrance and beauty. This choice reflected the Rivas' commitment to producing wines that would delight the senses and capture the essence of their surroundings.

Over the following years, Frangipani Estate Winery steadily expanded its vineyard holdings, acquiring additional parcels of land in prime Napa Valley appellations. The Rivas passionately cultivated their vineyards, employing sustainable farming practices and meticulous vineyard management techniques. This commitment to quality and environmental stewardship became a hallmark of Frangipani Estate Winery.

In 1985, after a decade of honing their winemaking skills and perfecting their craft, the Rivas released their inaugural vintage of Frangipani wines. The wines were an instant success, captivating wine enthusiasts with their exceptional balance, complexity, and distinctive regional character. Frangipani quickly gained recognition as one of Napa Valley's premier boutique wineries.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Frangipani Estate Winery continued to thrive under the stewardship of the Rivas. The winery's reputation grew steadily, with its wines consistently earning critical acclaim and coveted accolades. Frangipani wines became known for their elegant expressions of classic Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, showcasing the exceptional maturity and concentration achieved through meticulous vineyard management.

In recent years, the Rivas have handed over the reins of Frangipani Estate Winery to their children, who share the same unwavering devotion and commitment to crafting exceptional wines. Building upon their parents' legacy, they have embraced innovative winemaking techniques while staying true to the winery's core values.

Today, Frangipani Estate Winery stands as a shining example of the enduring spirit and dedication that define California's winemaking heritage. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
