Fortino Winery History

Fortino Winery is a historic and internationally renowned winery located in Gilroy, California. With its rich legacy of winemaking, Fortino Winery has become synonymous with excellence, tradition, and innovation in the world of California wines.

The winery was established in 1970 by winemaker Ernest Fortino, who had a deep-rooted passion for winemaking and a vision of creating exceptional, handcrafted wines that would showcase the unique terroir of Santa Clara Valley. From humble beginnings, Fortino Winery has grown into a prominent name in the California wine industry, garnering numerous accolades and recognition for its exceptional wines.

Ernest Fortino, a third-generation Italian winemaker, inherited his family's winemaking tradition and knowledge. Drawing inspiration from his ancestors, who hailed from the Piedmont region of Italy, Ernest sought to bring a touch of Old World winemaking techniques to California. He carefully selected the finest grape varietals, focusing on reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, along with whites like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Fortino Winery's success can be attributed to Ernest Fortino's commitment to quality, attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of excellence. He carefully tended to the vineyards, nurturing the grapes to their fullest potential. With the help of his wife, Martha, Ernest personally oversaw every step of the winemaking process, from grape to bottle. This hands-on approach ensured that each wine produced reflected their unwavering dedication to quality and craft.

Over the years, Fortino Winery has expanded its vineyard holdings, now encompassing multiple estate vineyards across the Santa Clara Valley. These vineyards benefit from the region's warm days, cool nights, and fertile soils, giving Fortino Winery an ideal environment for cultivating exceptional grapes. The diverse terroirs of each vineyard enable the production of a wide range of wines, each showcasing unique characteristics and flavors.

Fortino Winery is renowned for its red wines, with their Cabernet Sauvignon being one of their flagship offerings. The depth, complexity, and elegance of their Cabernet Sauvignon exemplify the winery's commitment to crafting wines of the highest quality. From rich, full-bodied Merlots to aromatic and vibrant Sangiovese blends, every Fortino wine is a testament to Ernest Fortino's vision and expertise.

In addition to their red wines, Fortino Winery also produces remarkable white wines. With their Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varietals, they bring the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines their red wines. These whites showcase the region's distinct fruit flavors and vibrant acidity, resulting in refreshing and well-balanced wines.

Fortino Winery's legacy extends beyond their exceptional wines. The winery's charming facilities provide a picturesque setting for visitors to relax and enjoy wine tastings, tours, and events. Whether it's a casual afternoon picnic on their serene grounds or an elegant wedding reception in their breathtaking barrel room, Fortino Winery offers a memorable experience that celebrates the beauty of California wine country.

Today, Fortino Winery continues to be family-owned and operated, with Ernest and Martha Fortino's son, Gino, carrying on his parents' winemaking tradition. With its rich history and exceptional wines, Fortino Winery continues to showcase the best that California winemaking has to offer.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
