Forth Vineyards History

Forth Vineyards is a renowned and historic winery located in the heart of California's prestigious Sonoma County. Founded in 1979 by the esteemed winemaker Richard Forth, this family-owned and operated vineyard has deep roots in the region's winemaking tradition.

The story of Forth Vineyards begins with Richard Forth's passion for viticulture and winemaking. As a young man, Richard developed a keen interest in grape growing and acquired a deep knowledge of the art and science of winemaking. With a strong belief in the potential of Sonoma County as a world-class wine region, Richard set out to establish his own winery and create exceptional wines that would showcase the unique character of the area.

Richard Forth purchased a picturesque property in the Russian River Valley, known for its cool climate and ideal conditions for cultivating premium wine grapes. The estate offered a diverse range of terroirs, with varying soil types and microclimates, which Richard recognized as the foundation for crafting distinctive wines of exceptional quality.

With meticulous attention to detail, Richard planted a diverse selection of grape varietals on his property, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. He believed that these varietals were particularly well-suited to the region's climate and soil, allowing the wines to express the unique characteristics of the vineyard and surrounding terroir.

Over the years, Forth Vineyards gained a well-deserved reputation for producing small-lot, handcrafted wines that showcased the very best of the Russian River Valley. Richard Forth's commitment to sustainable farming practices and his reverence for the land garnered acclaim from both critics and enthusiasts alike.

The winery's wines steadily gained recognition, with its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir standing out as signature offerings. Forth Vineyards' Chardonnay exhibits vibrant citrus notes, elegant minerality, and a well-balanced acidity, while the Pinot Noir captivates with its expressive aromas of red fruits, delicate spice, and velvety texture.

As Forth Vineyards continued to flourish, Richard Forth's children, Sarah and David, joined the family business, bringing their own expertise and passion for winemaking. With a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, they carry forward Richard's vision, continuing to craft exceptional wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of the estate and the Russian River Valley.

Today, Forth Vineyards remains committed to producing limited-production wines that exude elegance, complexity, and a true sense of place. The winery's commitment to sustainable practices, hand-harvesting, and gentle, minimal-intervention winemaking ensures that each bottle captures the essence and soul of their exceptional vineyard.

Forth Vineyards holds a special place in Sonoma County's winemaking history, as it represents the dedication and vision of one family to produce world-class wines from one of the most revered wine regions in the world. With every sip, one can taste the rich heritage, meticulous craftsmanship, and passion that have made Forth Vineyards a true icon in the California wine industry.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
